I'm looking to get a deeper sounding muffler for starters- I only have a $200 budget, does anyone have any suggestions?

Only one I have is to save up. Most exhausts I've seen are above your budget.

Will a muffler alone not make any difference?

it will make some difference. You can always save money by buying a universal muffler and buying a bit of pipe to make it work. Ones specific to the solara are usually over 400 unless you get the trd axle back, which will still be over your budget.

A SRI will help out your sound too.

for under 200 for the first mod....

...get the TRD RSB

improving handling is always a better upgrade to do if you're working on a budget....

you'll be able to take corners faster and your car will feel more stable (less body roll)....rather than get an exhast that may give you +4 or 5hp...

if you do an exhaust first, you may get some top end power, but you'll probably lose some low end torque (slower from a stop, but faster when approaching the rev-limit).

oh yeah, and read up on the aftermarket parts sticky that is in the gen1/1.5 aftermarket upgrade subforum. it is the most current list of aftermarket parts for the solara.

you can get a TRD RSB by PMing reggie (NVDS1, i think is his username)...he works a toyota parts dept and is very helpful with solara specific parts sold thru toyota.

welcome to sg.

You could easily install a universal can muffler for under 100 bucks. I have a custom straight through exhaust, and it only cost me 14 dollars (i did the work myself). I Live in AL, where we dont have smog tests or emissions standards. You could put another 50 with that extra 100 dollars and get a rear sway bar. Theres a few up for sale on here right now.

I would get a universal muffler custom fit with 2.5 inch pipe and a flange so you can add a custom catback later. Also the OBX intake seems to be a good deal with 2.75 inch intake pipe. If you shop around you can probably make it under 200.
