No more resonator for me (video UPDATE 3_16_08)

Well after about 4 years of salt and other winter crap my non stainless resonator broke well actually snapped at the coupler. My plan is to build a full stainless system that would be universal for gen 1-1.5 to be a mid pipe for the TRD muffler. So I decided to go the cheap route to fix it for now using piper from autozone and 2 muffler tips to make the S bend required but I thought I would post about the resonator vs no resonator experiences I am having.

First I would like to state my resonator was a louvered type not perforated so it is a lot more restrictive than the kind I will be using on the new system and the kind I have recommend to people on the board. I was young and stupid and did not know the difference.

The power difference over the louvered resonator is noticeable but I do not believe this would be the case with a straight through perforated resonator. As for sound level it is hard to say because I drove around with a cracked resonator for so long I was use to the sound with an exhaust leak but I think it is a little louder than with a resonator. The actual sound its self is about the same inside the cabin but with the window down or outside the car it is a different story. The sound is much more raspy than before the borla muffler still sounds good but the quality is a bit more tinny now. All together it is not unpleasing and I will get a video clip so I can compare it to the stainless exhaust this spring.

So if you want pics or have a question just ask and I will get them for you just thought I would post my experiences.

Before with resonator (I like this one better)

After without

I can second that. I cut the resonator off my car and welded a piece of straight pipe in for a short while. And I have a TRD muffler. I personally think the sound is the same its just a little more pronounced. It doesnt make the car too loud either. I personally want the sound to be a little louder than the TRD, but not too loud. Without the resonator it brings it to the level I wanted. My only problem was that when I welded the pipe in the heat pulled it a little on me changing the angle. This caused my muffler tip to butt up against the unibody of my car and everytime I hit a bump you could hear it clunk. The clunking got to me and Dat so graciously sold me his center section so now I got the stock resonator again.

I will try to get a video but the only problem is comparing it to current vids I have is I think I may have had a small hole in my exhaust when my previous videos were shot making it louder and slightly more raspy. It will be interesting to compare them. I think the best comparison will be when I make my full stainless setup in a month or two. My current setup was the easiest and cheapest fix at the time only 20 bucks to replace the middle section.
