OBX Headers Cracked

OBX Headers Cracked

Postby SpeedySolara » Mon Apr 05, 2010 10:49 pm

Over the past few days my exhaust got louder and I felt a loss of power. I put the car on the lift and the OBX Y-Pipe (rear header) flange had a hairline crack almost half way around. With that being said, I think its safe to say JPP is better quality than OBX, hence the price difference. Not to mention, JPP has been around for many winters and proved to withstand the harsh weather conditions. I had this setup for 6 months and look at what happens. Any others had bad experiences with the OBX Headers/Y-Pipe setup for our cars?

Let's have a few more incidents before we start blackballing OBX.

Is it possible they hit them when pulling the engine for the engine swap?

I suppose you're right, maybe I was venting last night lol.

Adam, the y-pipe was never removed to swap the motor so its somewhat impossible to have a crack especially on the top side due to a fall. If the crack was on one of the headers it would be a different story and I would agree with you that they prbably dropped it but this is not the case.

Midias, NY salt may have been the cause but even if thats the case, its unfortunate 1 winter could do that to a supposed quality aftermarket exhaust. Just imagine if our cars started falling apart after 1 winter of ownership.

On another note, doesn't OBX offer a lifetime warranty on their headers/y-pipe? Maybe I should look into that.

OBX carries at least one-year limited warrantee for sure on their headers...you may be right about the life-time for defects though

I'd definitely take it off even if it's to take take a look at it and see where it went wrong.

It's very possible that during reinstallation of the motor, they had to force the y-pipe back onto the manifold, which added stress, but the pipe should be able to take that no problem. It really sounds like a welding defect or something

I'm surprised since the welds on the headers are all very cleanly welded while the flex-pipe quality may leave a bit to be desired

I've had my headers on for about 16 months now and no problems at all, knock on wood

I have had my OBX headers for about 6 months with no problems. I should add that I have been through the worst winter this year MD saw and they keep working fine.

the small egr pipe on the rear (firewall) manifold broke off on mine. we put in a high temp silicone hose in its place. cracked right at the weld, must not have been placed true on the jig.

DUDE! Mine too! This happened like two weeks ago.

Cracked right at the weld, just like yours.

My assumption has been that a combination of the EGR tube not lining up right at the flange, plus the vibration of my rear header hitting my frame when I go into reverse probably had something to do with it.

Can you give me some info (part number?) on the high temp silicone hose you used? I've been trying to figure out how the hell I'm gonna fix it since a whole section of the EGR pipe snapped off and got lost while I was driving down the highway.

I'm curious to hear how that silicone hose your using holds up in the heat down there.
