"Chip", noun; def: a small electronic device intended to remove a large sum of money from the owner of a modern car, by inducing a belief that:
1. the chip mfg. knows more about the engine than Toyota, and can produce power that did not exist before but without violating emissions laws
2. there are no consequences or trade-offs (bad mileage, irregular idle, flat spots, poor response, hesitation) in use of same
3. the component, although made in Mexico/China/Bangladesh by someone who does not own a pair of shoes, is at least as reliable as the original parts
4. it does not require other modifications (wire cutting, hoses moved, controls bypassed) that will void the warranty

There may be exceptions, but every few years a magazine develops a pair of balls (throws away advertising money) and actually tests the chips - usually on a Honda. They invite the chip company to provide their own car (but, I'm sure it's completely stock.....) and mechanic.
The results? Of 10 cars:
1 does not show up at all (DNF on the way)
1 others do not complete the test (failed while being observed - smoked clutch, misfire, head gasket, no oil pressure, chip burned out)
2 others require repairs (exhaust leak, change injectors), complete the test, but produce less power than the original dead-stock car
3 others complete the test with no problems, but produce less power than the original dead-stock car
2 others produces about the same power as stock, but slightly different power curve
1 produces slightly more power after 5 hours of adjustment by 3 mechanics - at 10,000 RPM

In general, the likelihood that a chip (at least one of many made) will help is proportionate to how many years ago the car was made. 2009: no shot whatever. 2003: may help. 1987: good idea.

There are other things to do - read up on it.

They have a camry dyno chart but it looks kinda weak. Either way it shows an 11 hp gain for the 2.2 auto 2000 camry not sure how believable it is.

http://www.jetchip.com/DownloadFile.asp ... 065003.pdf

The only person on the forum that I remember having a jet chip was paladin but he sold his car in favor of a hemi. Here is a quote of what he said. I am not sure if he still had it installed on his super solara with the custom intercooled SC someone would have to send him an email.

"Just wanted to let you know I reinstalled my ECU after you returned it to me after the upgrade. Couple of things I'd like to say to any potential customers.

You returned my ECU within 24 business day hours as promised. My wife was even surprised.

The car started and idled like a charm.

I took it out for a short run just to check for ignition problems. It was smooth as a babies ***!!

OK, I decided after about a 15 minute easy roll to punch.

From a stand still in drive (automatic transmission) I can not launch without lighting the tires to a stand still if I floor it.

From 5 to 25 MPH the car will burn the tires with unbelievable torque.
The car shifts up and down with authority. I's swear I was driving a 8 cylinder. No doubt your ECU upgrade has been the best investment I made since adding the TRD Supercharger.

Finally, thanks for everything and you got another satisfied customer."

TRD Supercharger
InJen Cold Air Intake
Hyper-Voltage Voltage Stabilizer
JP Performance Headers and Y-Pipe
TRD Exhaust
Magnacore Plug Wires
NGK Plugs
Split Second Rev-Delimiter

The list goes on but that's enough for this letter

Again THANKS!!"

Sounds like something good to do after you're done doing everything else...

Or you can just get a S-AFC and get it dyno-tuned...

I agree - when you've done something (exhaust, porting, compression, cam, blower) that exceeds the span of compensation built into a late ECM you need to over-ride the commands (fuel, spark) or you'll melt something.

*yawn*

i've been wanting to see a solara blow up for a while now. why don't you get a chip and a videorecorder and entertain us.

seriously though, chipping the solara is about as useful as hitting yourself in the junk.

the stock ecu can handle most bolt on mods, and when you are putting out more power than your stock ecu can handle, then you're gonna want to have it tuned at a shop, with a A/F controller (like an AFC neo or SAFC-II or AEM piggyback module).

or you can just pull your stock ecu out, ship it to jet, and have them 're-tune' for your stock setup.

the only person i heard of that 'chipped' their car was paladin06greg, who is quoted above in his letter back to Jet, and by no means is your solara ANYWHERE NEAR what his was (power-wise). that little laundry list of mods he had done is misleading, as that list only looks to be about $4,500 worth of mods, and i'm pretty sure he ended up doing around $10k+ worth of mods by the end of his solara days.

bottom line: to mod a solara in a worthwhile fashion, you're gonna have to drop some serious cash. there aren't any cheap shortcuts like 'chipping' it to unlock some more power. why don't you just buy a TRD supercharger? that's much more reliable and guarenteed to net a power gain.

or you could always put nitrous onto the car.

but i still suggest you get the chip and videorecorder. we need a visual example of why we don't do silly things like 'chip' our cars, for when the next person asks.
