P0420 and highflow cats READ THIS
OK for the last 4 years or so I have been running a highflow EPA compliant cat from magnaflow. I have gotten a CEL twice with the code P0420 which is catalyst insufficient or exhaust too dirty. The first time was with my custom exhaust when I went through a huge puddle which was probably the cause. The second time was with my obx exhaust and the same model cat from magnaflow. The light came on one morning then left about 1.5 weeks later on its own.
The differences between the two exhausts is one is 2.5 inch and has an O2 sensor mounted on the top and the other is 3 inch and has the o2 sensor mounted on the side.
So what all this tells me is the cat I have been using is right on the hairy edge of setting off the CEL depending on sensor position and more likely to set it off with a SC.
Now this can be a good or a bad thing
The bad news is you may need to add a new part to keep the CEL off.
The good news is sense it is so close the $5 anti fowler mod should keep that CEL off for good so a simulator is not needed.
Ok that is all any questions just ask.
