Hi Boys - this girl needs advice with an acceleration issue

Postby Solaragirl2004 » Tue Nov 04, 2008 8:13 pm

I know this is SolaraGuy, but this girl needs some help. I have a 2004 Solara SLE and am having a huge issue with the drive by wire. My car hesitates when I try to accelerate in low gears, sometimes for 5-10 seconds. When the power kicks in the car jolts quite badly. I've been told that this is a known issue and that until Toyota creates a fix, there is nothing that can be done.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any advice? I'm worried about this because I will soon be driving in snow and ice and although I have invested in some good snow tires I can see it still being quite unsafe. Also, I have a V6, it should not perform this way.

Welcome to SolaraGuy!

Don't mind the name, it's somewhat of a misnomer since there's a few ladies on this board either way.

ECM CALIBRATION: SHIFT FEELING
ENHANCEMENT
Models:
'04 - '05 Camry / Solara (3MZ-FE, 5-Speed A/T)

Introduction
To improve the transmission shift feeling during specific operating modes, the Engine Control Module (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) calibration has been revised. These improvements include:
^Reduced downshift lag when accelerating at speeds from 10 to 20 mph.
^Less gear hunting when driving on/off accelerator pedal at 20 to 30 mph (for example: during heavy rush-hour traffic).
^Improved response rate during heavy acceleration from a stop.
NOTE :
^Version 12.2a or later Diagnostic Tester software is required to perform this procedure.
^Before proceeding, verify the ECM (PCM) calibration has NOT been updated by checking for the Authorized Modifications Label (shown in step 1 of the Repair Procedure).
^Harsh ATM shifting may result if any Repair Procedure steps are omitted (specifically steps 2 and 4 of "Flash Reprogram ECM").
Applicable Vehicles
^2004 - 2005 model year Camry vehicles equipped with 3MZ-FE engine and 5-speed automatic transmission.

welcome to SG

the ecu reflash doesnt really help the issue. ive had it done twice a the toyota dealership by my own mechanic there that i know personally.

also i have a cp-e sri intake and it makes no different in the lag.

only way it really seems to not jerk at much is using the shift-tronic system our car comes with

goodluck trying to "fix" the lag issue you have

If you're talking about that HUGE "mash-pedal-nothing-happens" lag when accelerating after making a left/right turn then I'm afraid that is unfortunately normal. The Gen 2 is programmed as such that you cannot break/coast through the beginning of a turn and then hard accelerate out the back end of that turn. (I'm assuming that prevents possible tailspins)There's also a smaller 1-2 second lag that sometime happens when you're still rolling to a red light and it turns green and then accelerate, but every other car make I had did that though. As far as snow, I drove the 'Lara through major tonnage of snow this past winter and the lag is a non-issue in relation to losing traction.

Welcome to the site.

1) Lag issue is a very sore spot for some of us - which is why we have done a lot of modding to our cars to try and compensate for it, with varied and limited results so far.

2) Search the "Gen 2" thread and you will find discussions relating to the lag and performance.

3) Watch out for the leg-humpers on here that never really talk to real women. ;)
