Probably from your grill if you've been following alot of cars closely.
Snow and slush containing bits of worn tire, dirt, salt, etc. being kicked up from the cars in front of you then sticking to your nose and caking up.

The tire smell can stick around in the vents for a while. Easily a few days if there's enough. Did you so see any smoke from the tires? If not, then it probably isn't the tires leaving the smell.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

The only way you can smell a transmission problem is to pull the dipstick and smell the fluid. A burned smell is not good.

There is a memo on the auto transmissions and it involves rocking (repeated D then R cycle) in the snow.

The smell from burned rubber can linger. Give it time and it will go away.
