CEL + Fuel Odor

CEL + Fuel Odor

Hey all,

I'm going to have this checked, but I'd like to know if anyone has any insight on this issue beforehand.

The car has been smelling gas now for a few weeks. It seems to be coming from the fuel trap door. I've checked for leaks, none to be found. It almost feels like there is some sort of pressure building up in the tank or whatever.

Could it be some sort of a vaccum problem or some sort of valve not opening?! It's a weird problem....

Anybody have any insight as to what the problem might be?!

Thanks!

there is pressure building up in your tank......if you hear a pshhhh when you open up your tank chances are it is sealing.....follow the lines out to the filter and rail and see if you can spot a leak

That's the weird thing, if there was pressure, I would hear pissshhh when "un-screwing" the fuel cap.... that really isn't the case.

The car isn't running rich, I see no difference in gas mileage....

I'm starting to suspect a leaking fuel cap. I've checked for leaks and the smell definately comes from the fuel cap, no odor underneath the car nor near the gas tank...

Could the fuel cap be the culprit??

I would guess P0446 and one of the evap valves is not working. Hit up autozone and get the codes read.

Update:

Went to get codes checked, came out 0135... O2 sensor....

Don't get it... This is pretty weird... any ideas? The odor really sucks... and there is no leaks what so ever....

Your system is probably running super rich due to the O2 sensor being bad and you are smelling a lot of un burned fuel. I guess it is time to replace the sensor. I would go either NGK or Denso NOT Bosch

0135... O2 sensor (bank1 sensor1)

your car is running in a 'warmup' loop, to prevent running lean (and causing problems) it jets the A/F ratio a little rich. it's not terribly noticable if you don't drive your car hard (MPG will vary very little, unless you go WOT a lot).

use denso, not bosch, i don't know either way regarding NGK. change the oxygen sensor (btw, you need to know if you have cali spec or federal spec, and you're gonna want to read how to do it, since bank1 sensor1 is between the engine and firewall). if you still are having the problem with smelling gas, then check the codes again (if a CEL is thrown).

Replace the O2 sensor first

then check your fuel filler neck, they usually rot out and cause a fuel smell
