I just had a few quick questions that i hope someone can help me with.

1. What octane gas are you guys running in your V-6's? The manual said that 87 is acceptable but that 91 is recommended for optimum performance. My maxima says the same thing, BUT if i did run 87 in the maxima....i'd be going through knock sensors like water, and it runs like crap. Any thoughts?

2. I was thinking about blacking out my corners and headlights. Does anyone here with a Black gen1 have any pics with blacked out headlights they can post?

3. Where can I find clear corners for a Gen1....e-bay was a no-go for me.

Same thing as with Dawgz. I'm boosted so running 93, but before that I was running 87 with no issues.

I typically run mid-grade. The ECU doesn't pull timing as badly or at all with 89 in the tank.. Definitely a difference between 87 and 91 (CA high octane..).

If you ever get the chance to hook your car up to a scantool, you can watch the timing advance and see the differences for yourself :)

Do these cars have knock sensors that go bad if you use 87?

I have run 87 in my 99 v-6 from the day I got it in November of 98. Never had a problem and no knock sensor problem either.

87------------->93 = only 4 dollars more on a tank. Thats basically just not wasting money on ONE greasy wasteful meal a week or one useless mods.

I use 93 have for a long time. I used 87 for about 1.5 weeks and had a knock sensor blow. I do not know if it is related or the sensor just got old but I am back to 93 now. Also I am NA

I had a 97 Maxima, and ran premium all the time. Anything less pings, and performance suffered greatly. Not only that, It had to be Top Tier gas. Maxima was very very picky.

As for the 99 Solara V6 5sp, I've been running premium and works well. I use Chevron and Shell, and tried 76 once. I'm scared to try non-top tier.

For the heck of it, I tried 87 regular. I got 1 more mpg but at the expense of really really crappy performance, and major pinging anytime I loaded the engine. I thought it was a fluke, so I ran another tank of Chevron 87, and same thing happened... mpg stayed at 26 (I've been getting 25 running premium), car has no balls on acceleration, and pings.

Went back to Premium for 2 tanks, and now I'm trying 89 Chevron. It still pings when I push it hard, but performance is nearly as good as premium. And mpg is upper 25. I'll likely stay 89 now, and 91 when I want a lil more fun.

But just to rehash: 87 sucks big time on performance, but got a pretty good jump in mpg. It's a tossup.
