Hi guys i found a 99 v6 manual solara near my house that i could get it for a good deal but then the only problem with it is that when you step onto the clutch it doesnt go into gear so i was wondering how much would it take to repair that problem?

It depends on what is wrong.

If the clutch pedal is improperly adjusted, it will be very cheap.

If the clutch line is just low on fluid, then it will be cheap.

If the clutch slave cylinder is broken then it will be relatively cheap.

If the clutch master cylinder is broken, then it will not be too bad.

If it is the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing then it will be somewhat expensive.

If it is in the transmission then it will be very expensive.

Once you throw in labor or more than one of these repairs it will be extremely expensive.

If it were me doing it, it probably wouldn't be too bad, because at worst all I would have to do is replace the transmission. Since it is the same transmission that came in the 91+ vintage MR2's there must be some around somewhere.

You need to find out why it isn't shifting to determine this answer. Plus, of course, where you take it to be done will effect the price.

I can tell you that my Corolla transmission will go into gear with the car off, WITHOUT pressing in the clutch. So it's kind of sounding like the tranny to me. I presume the Solara does the same. I can't tell you for sure since in my family the Solara belongs to my wife and I can't say that I've ever tried to put it in gear without stepping on the clutch.

Good luck.

I would have it checked out if it is cheap and it needs a new clutch and things get a nice performance one and a light weight flywheel

Absolutely. I wouldn't pass up the car because of this. In fact, you can use it as a bargaining chip to lower the price. I think these cars are awesome and best in their V6 5 speed form.

you can easily bargain the price down $1K because of the problem.

because at worst, it would cost that much for labor+parts for a new clutch and flywheel and more for performance stuff

Thanks guys. The car is a 99 manual v6 with only 50k on the odometer. The only problem i known is the clutch but then the car sticker is a 2002...so will there be any problem with the engine if its been sitting there for so long?? The asking price is $3,500 but i plan to negotiated down to $3,000.

^^ I think he's referring to the license tag "sticker" - last registered in 2002... which means its been sitting a long time.

My suggestion - as has been others - see if you can get a mechanic there to check it out and see how much it's gonna cost to get running. Sitting that long can have other hidden problems (dried up seals, etc.) - then negotiate the price from there.

I agree. We have essentially the same car with 190K on the odo and according to Kelly Blue Book it is worth about $6,000. The guy is probably having trouble selling it because it is a manual and has a problem. His problem is your good fortune. Everything can be fixed and by my reckoning, you have about $3000 to use fixin' before you come out on the bad end of this deal.

Sitting will probably hurt the A/C. Cars don't like to sit. The moving parts need to be run, but hey, that's why the car found you. You are going to buy it at $3000, get it fixed and drive the h*ll out of it. Right?
