I am looking at replacing the timing belt and have been looking at different kits. Does anyone have a recommendation? And, what about spark plugs?

thanks

you can probably look an ebay for the timing belt kit, it comes with everything..

just go to your local parts store an ask them what spark plugs you need they have from cheap to expensive..

I'd recommend biting the bullet and taking it to the dealership for the timing belt. They're the professionals that do it everyday and have experience. It only cost me around $400 with the water pump and drive belts and I figured this was cheaper than me messing everything up trying to do it myself. This is the only time I'd recommend going to the dealership...it hurts for me to say it.

I have a friend here whose family owns a car shop. He has always done the complicated car work for me, but I usually buy the parts and just bring the car to him. So, I was looking online at timing belt kits and spark plugs. I wasn't going to do the water pump, but since it is all apart I think I will get one of those too.

thanks

Just had a timing belt etc. done at the dealership at 60K miles. Drive belts were a given. Water pump just made sense. Crank seal would be done based on inspection. I said do it anyway. I know what happens when the seal gets hard. I timed the coolant change and flush to occur at the same time.

I think I paid 460 for all that - the inspection.

That's a hell of a deal. I got quoted $650 for all that so I said to hell with it and got the parts from Reggie for 1/3 of the cost.

Reggie (NVDIS1) works at Toyota in St. Louis and can get all the goods. I got my RSB from him a few weeks ago and then I ordered all the stuff listed above from him the other day.

I got my stuff from www.azautohaus.com They're located in Arizona, and I received my order three days after placing it. I figured rather than spending more money to by OE stuff from the dealer, the OEM stuff found there wouldn't be bad.

Changing the timing belt and water pump really isnt that bad once you've figured everything out. It took me awhile (days) because I didn't know the right technique to removing parts.

The advice I can give you:
1. Removing the crankshaft was pretty tough because it kept turning. I finally just put a socket on the bolt and stuck a cheater bar in. Then very briskly start the ignition for a split of a second and that will do the job. Then rent a pully puller from Autozone to pull it out.

2. I had the same trouble with the two camshafts. Don't remove the tensioner yet. I used the timing belt tension to remove those bolts (only do that if you're going to replace the belt.

3. Read the manual carefully and torque to in-lbs when it say in-lbs not ft-lbs...I did that with the water pump bolt and it took two days to order that bolt (just over $1) from the dealer.

Anyones welcome to ask for more advice.

BTW, it was a V6 that I worked on.
