Cleaning Engine Bay: How do I remove this?

Cleaning Engine Bay: How do I remove this?

Postby CamryOnBronze » Fri May 25, 2007 5:01 pm

okay, so here is the deal. I have only had the car for about 2k miles. Something blew up at some point in the passenger side of the engine bay near the power steering fluid and coolant reservoirs. It is caked on and stuck in there pretty good, not something simple green and a powerwashing will remove, so I know it isnt recent and isnt leaking at the moment. I think when they replaced whatever broke they didnt clean up what had spilled... bummer.

There is a box right by the washer fluid fill with steel lines coming out of it with bosch markings on it. Im guessing it has something to do with ABS... but Im not positive what it is for. I know I cant exactly remove this all of the way from the bay (I dont think) but is there a way to pick it up a couple of inches so I can clean under it? How would I go about removing it if I wanted to? I removed both reservoir tanks over there and cleaned under them just fine.

There are two bolts in the side of it- I removed those and tried pulling up on the whole unit, but it wasnt moving much. I dont want to damage anything so I thought I would ask how to remove it. Thanks to anyone with ideas:

1. I know to fill my coolant, just didnt do it yet.

2. Did you read my post? I already tried simple green, this stuff really needs to be scrubbed.

Its been awhile since I touch that but either theres a bolt under it or theres a slid under it that you just slide the unit over. I wouldnt touch it because if one wire or line snap, Your going to have a big bill. Just use engine degresser.

Suggestion

It's always easier to clean if you know what you're cleaning. Find out first, then clean. Toyota used to use black blinker fluid before 2002, there was a TSB to flush out the old fluid and replace with clear fluid. Jon. btw cars that haven't been taken back will have blackish turn signal lights and headlights, similar to how yours looks.

^^ WTF Jon? That was helpful.

Damon, keep using degreaser / simple green and a toilet brush. You may need to cut the loop on the toilet brush so it's like a long pipe cleaner attached to a stick. The brissels are not too strong to scratch up the paint but strong enough to work the gunk off. If needed, loosen the accumulator and lift up slightly. Zip tie it up if you need but as said before, watch the lines. Have fun, I'll take a look at it at the next meet.

Is it the brown gunk to the left of the ABS solenoid, and what exactly blew so that we can offer something more... Insightful?

Yes its the brown gunk, I got a ton of it off before I took that pic. I just kept dousing it over and over and its finally starting to break down, so I think Ive got it now.

I have no idea what blew, like I said it wasnt when I owned the car, it was the previous owner... Im no noob to cars or cleaning engine baysand I dont really care what was leaking because it is fixed and isnt leaking anymore, I was simply looking to see if anyone knew how to remove the abs actuator so I could clean under it, thats it... thanks.
