transmission fluid

Postby Chinky420 » Wed Oct 15, 2008 2:10 pm

according to my haynes manual, the capacity of the pan (not the differential) is 5.0 quarts. when i changed out my tranny fluid, i only drained out like, 3 quarts, but i don't know if that was by design, or if it was because i've been burning tranny fluid.

the reason i'm unsure if it was by design is because my haynes manual is actually for the camry/solara/es300....which have slight differences in their tranny setup (though the book only specified the peculiarities of the camry and the es300, leaving us solara's in the dark).

and after talking to my transmission guy, the 99 V6 does have a seperate differential, with separate fluid, i think the capacity is like 3.7 quarts, but i'm not positive (you should verify that independent of me).

hope that helps.

Total capacity of the tranny if u do a flush (this is taking into account the liquid in the torque converter)...is about 14quarts.

Shops have a machine that pushes ur old fluid out with pressure and then pushes the new fluid in.

Keep in mind that some people recommend not to do a flush like that on a tranny that has over 50k milage and has never gotten a flush like that. This is where a drain/fill a few times is recommended. Its just how u wanna do it though.

Yeah do a drain and refill every oil change or so 3-4 times and you'll be good.

You can upgrade the magnets on the transmission pan. I don't have the link but I'll post it later.

So chinky, how many times did you drain and refill? How many quarts did you buy and was it enough? I'm considering doing this myself before too long.

oh...and what do the magnets do?

the DIY is pretty easy. Use a 24mm to get out the drain plug (the oil gets everywhere when you drain it and it stinks) and then the fill plug is the other bolt that looks just like the drain plug but angled. Drain and fill..

The plugs are on the transmission.

I have 150k miles on my transmission and my engine. I'm not going to force fluid thru, and besides I want to clean my magnets off.

no they take the bad tranny oild out and they put the cleaner in the tranny takin out any additiional scum left over then they put new oil in but hey i see no point in changing ur tranny fluid if your not going to change the filter. just my two sence and they tranny plug can be cleaned easly its not like most of the scum will be on there anyways?

Ok. Listen. I am going to change my fluid, pan gasket, and filter. I was simply asking how many times that Chinky420 refilled to complete this process. I am not interested in taking my car to a shop and have some low buck low knowledge mechanic do what ever they do to my transmission.
