Oil question

Postby Jakecallun20 » Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:28 pm

Yeah. I'll be getting Mobil 1 "fully" synthetic this weekend, 5 quarts of 5W-30. Also a Mobil 1 Oil filter for my car too. Appreciate the help guys. 8)

Jakecallun20 wrote:Hey. I am unsure of what type or weight of oil is in my car. I didn't do the last change and I am due for one. The last change was done under the previous owner's care. I know that I've had my car for a while, but I don't drive much so I just hit about 10k miles since last change, and I've been putting it off. So my question is, is it safe to put Mobil 1 Extended performance 5w-20 or 30 "fully synthetic" in? Will it cause leaks if my previous oil just happened to be conventional oil. Thanks Jake

Holy crap 10K and I thought I was bad when I got to 3200

If he had synthetic in previously, then 10K wouldn't be that bad. Some Mobil products advertise 10,000 and 15,000 mile intervals, which I think is crazy.

I use Mobil 1 Syn. 5w-30 or 10w-30 and change the oil every 5,000-6,000 miles, I could probably go to 7,500 but I don't like to wait that long.

I know I know, I should have changed it a few months ago when I got the car. It WILL NOT happen again, promise. I am changing it this weekend, so no worries. By the way, how can I tell if I have sludge?

by removing the REAR valve cover....that's where most of the sludge will be....and that's if you have any.

There are a few tell-tale signs though:
1)do you smell burnt oil from your exhaust?
2)do you keep having to add oil to the engine?
3) do you notice any dark residue residing at the end of the dipstick?
4)does your oil light come on at all?

And what needs to come apart to pull that off? Intake manifold? If I do have sludge can I clean it out by hand or have to take it in?

Lol nice. No burnt smell, no adding of oil, the only thing dark on my dipstick is the oil itself. And the oil light, Nah. Only idiot light that is on in my car is the check engine light.

Um, did you just say the check engine light or do you mean the maintenance light (on the Gen2 they're separate idiot lights, I'm not sure about Gen1)?
