Washer Fluid Gone Bad

Washer Fluid Gone Bad

Postby tbjehlen » Tue Jul 08, 2008 7:42 pm

I have a 2000 Solara and the washer fluid keeps going rancid. Is anyone else have this problem? It is the second time this has happened and it is nasty. We completely changed out the fluid when it happened the first time and it happened again. What can i do to stop this from happening in the future? Thanks

What do you mean by rancid? I'm having trouble understanding rancid washer fluid.

I had some moldy orange composite floating in my tank when I pulled it a while back, but that fluid could have easily been 5 years old.

My suggestion would be to only fill the tank a bit at a time and refill as needed with fresh fluid.

Huh...wonder if it's the rainX? Maybe it's something in their fluid??

I dont think so because my brother also uses it and has no problems and i am not positive but i think the first stuff that went bad was something else. And i have used it off and on the entire time i have owned the car and have not had any problems till reciently. I dont know how to deal with it though cause I have never known anyone to have a problem like this before.

Maybe you got something in your fluid reservoir? Take a peek, might find something interesting in there.

What is the easiest way to just drain it? What my bro was thinking of doing was draining it, filling it back up with some alcohol and bleach and draining it again is this a good idea?

Alcohol + rubber lines = NO NO.

Bleach + paint = BAD.

Easiest way to drain it is just spray until it runs out. Then fill it with some anti-bacterial soap and hot water. Repeat until you believe it's clean. Then fill it with some nice new REGULAR washer fluid. I've heard some people complain about the rainX stuff.

If you just drain it by disconnecting the hose, it'll do no good because remnants of the old stuff is still inside the hoses, that's why it's best to just spray it until it's empty, add the cleaning solution, and run it through the system again (repeat). Plus you don't have to use any tools. How much easier can it get?

It's probably smelly because stagnant water gets old and mildewy and is a great breeding ground for bacteria. Emptying the reservoir won't do too good because they're still in there, clinging to the walls of the reservoir, eventually they spawn again and you get the same smell. You gotta PURGE that sucker.

On a side note, you don't really need to go overboard with the RainX brand. Usually a nice set of wipers or that chemical you wipe on your windshield is more than enough. Anything else is overkill unless you're driving through the ocean everyday.

Regular fluid has a fair amount of alcohol in it anyway and the ice remover is just more alcohol.

I live in Florida so ice really isnt an issue but bugs are and rainx bug washer fluid is the only 1 that gets all the love bugs off during love bug season... If you live in certain parts of Florida (i.e. Gainesville) then you know how bad it can get.

Alcohol will do nothing to rubber except clean off oily residue.

You might need to do a visual check of the reservoir to make sure someone or something didn't drop a chunk of something nasty down in there! :-?
