Resurfacing Rotors

Resurfacing Rotors

Postby Grnarowana » Tue Nov 20, 2007 1:28 pm

I'm about to resurface my rotoras for my 1999 V6 SE Solara. Does anyone know how long they will last after that? I'm putting on new brakes and stuff. Basically I'm doing a major tune up for my 120K car. And I got NorCAL ---> SoCal quite often because of school

^^ BS answer. It all depends on where in the process you resurface them. My camry had 90K miles, and I put Brembo's and resurfaced the camry rotors and put them on my solara at 25K...(ie. they had 90K on em). Now my solaras at 110K, so in theory, it really depends on the condition. I resurfaced when when i changed pads, not cus i needed new rotors. On my ES, the oem ones lasted till 140 when we resurfaced them, resurfacing will cost you 7 bucks a rotor when you remove it and take it to shops yourself.

If they are the original rotors at 120k I would replace them. If they only have 50-60k, and you’re tight for cash see if they can be spun. I always hate the question, “How long will brakes last?” It’s not a fair question as there are too many user variables.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

^^^x2 lots depends on your driving style, and how late you wait until you start braking.

they should be able to be resurfaced so long as they aren't warped, and they haven't been turned already (a few times). the guys at o'reilly's (or where ever) should have a book that will tell them if the rotor is too far gone to resurface (they won't do it for safety/liability reasons). if the rotors are scored (from driving w/o brake pads....after they've been totally used up), then the chance that they can resurface goes down, but it's not totally out of the picture.

if you're wanting to get them resurfaced, then just take them in and see if they can still cut them, if they can, go for it, and if not, then get new rotors of your choosing. 7 bucks per rotor sure beats buying brand new ones if they aren't needed IMO.
