what i've heard: an amp mor powerful than the sub will obviously run "too much" power to the sub
A sub more powerfull than the amp might get blown if the output level on the head unit (or amp but i don't think so) is telling the sub to run at full power. The sub handles the amp's power, but when it's trying to push the bass level coming out of the HU, the amp's power run's out and distortion (or noise) comes out of the speaker,, blowing the sub.
