Help choosing amp and speakers

Postby LeadFoot » Tue Apr 27, 2004 5:38 pm

I am still trying to settle on an amp and speaker combination. I have been looking at the Alpine MRV-T420($170) which does 110x2 RMS at 4ohms. The next one down is the 320 which does 80x2. I will be using it to drive focal 6.5 polyglass components. Here are my two questions: 1) Will the standard polyglass speakers fit or do I need the slim version and if so is there a difference in sound quality? 2) Which amp is best? Is the 420 overkill and could it potentially damage the speakers? Are there any better amps out there for this price range. I am rather new to this so any advice is appreciated.

You shouldn't need the slim version, my speakers have a 3" mounting depth and I had no problems. As far as the amp, yes the 420 is over kill, but A) no matter how big of an amp you put on your speakers, you will never run it over about 60wrms/channel B) The potential to make more power gives you more headroom before you start clipping. Either way you will be fine.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

Only thing I will add is I am not a real big fan of Japanese power amps. I like good ole USA built brute force power amps. Precision Power, older ones at least. Orion, Linear Power, Zapco.
