problem with cd/radio deck

Postby NJsolaraguy » Sun Apr 25, 2004 6:26 pm

I took out my head unit and reinstalled the stock cd/ radio deck . The problem is when i installed it and turned the car on there was no volume on the radio or cd player, couldnt use turn signals and none of the dash lights were on(speedometer, odom, tach, etc.) Its almost like my battery is dieing only i know its not the battery. Am i correct that only 3 slots in the stock radio/ cd need to be plugged into? I mean thats all the slots there are! someone please help me. Thx

please post in the correct forum!

sounds like u blew a fuse. I cant elaborate on that, since Ive never pulled out my fusebox, but thats what it sounds like. Might have gotten a spike when u installed the deck if u didnt disconnect the battery during the install.

My money's on the fuses as well, but you need to figure out what caused that fuse to blow. Pull the radio, replace any needed fuses (and there's about 600 fuse boxes in our cars). Use a multimeter to test the fuses (not a test light - you don't want to be setting off any airbags or wigging out the computer).

Then check the plugs for the radio. There's a good chance you may have plugged in the wrong plug. You should only have either 1 or 2 plugs for the radio (depending on whether or not you have a JBL factory amplified system). When you say there was no sound, do you mean it just lit up with no output? Or did it not even light up?

well the display part lit up and even played the cd.. there was just no sound and the volume was turned up. However, the buttons on the cd player didnt light up and my lights were on. There was a red fuse in the aftermarket head unit that i took out but there was nowhere for it to go in the stock one. There also was an extra wire in the aftermarket one but there was nowhere for that to go either so i assumed it wasnt needed for the stock one.

Hmm. Well, you still probably blew some fuses in the car somewhere. But I have a pretty good idea what happened with the radio. Whoever installed the radio used a Toyota bypass plug. You actually unplug the bypass plugs from their plugs to the right of the stereo. They then used those plugs, and not the plug that went to your factory stereo, to the aftermarket stereo.

Either take a picture or take a look in there. On the right, you'll see 2 plugs that those other two plugs will fit into. That should do it. Then just plug the 3rd into the factory radio.

If that doesn't make sense, take it into a Best Buy and have them trouble shoot it (they charge something like $16-$32). They can probably tell you what the issue is.
