Sony gets no respect in the sub world. When someone talks about a bad sub, it seems to always be Sony. (Like Hyundais in the car world...no offense to Hyundai owners). What I heard are they just have bad SQ (quality) and SPL (loudness), the two things that make a sub. Also, from what I heard, thier amps have output is also overrated and very low quality.
Im building a system soon, and everything Ive seen says to stay away from Sonys. I grabbed a few JBL subs off ebay for cheap (30 bucks for 2 12's), but not even sure if Im gunna use those. If you really want a cheap set, check out ebay for some local deals you can pick up, since subs are pretty heavy.
If you want something new and cheap, check out the Infinity reference series (1220s and 1230s) for subs. In all honesty though, Id start with the Amp, THEN the enclosure (box) and then think about the subs last, since the amp determines how much power you can run to the subs, and the box determines how large of subs you can get, and which ones (some are good for tighter applications, some dont work well without at least 3 cu.ft of room. To put what I heard about Sony in context, I read on the Sounddomain forum that "A good enclosure can make even Sony amps sound OK, but a bad enclosure can make JL Audio subs (Lexus of the sub world) sound like crap." Its all hearsay since I have nothin but a sleeping bag in my trunk right now, but I think my sources are pretty reliable.
Best place to read up on sub tech talk is Crutchfield.com, and then SoundDomain has an good forum to browse over for sound stuff. Crutchfield overcharges for most of its audio stuff though. Ive found SoundDomain and eTronics to be good online stores with fair prices for most of its products.
