I know a few of you guys have them installed and I would like to get impressions of your LSD. Maintenance, Chattering sounds, peformance improvements etc..

Quaife LSD going for $1300
Kaaz LSD going for $880

I just called Toysport in L.A. the other day and they quoted me $700. Does anyone know what company produces the LSD for TRD? I was told it was for the SW20 MR2 Turbo but also works for Solaras.

I'm trying to buy an LSD real soon because Toysport has to order from Japan and will take 4 to 6 weeks to get here. I'm trying to get my project done by mid May or first week of June.

Thanks.

I second that request for info and would also ask if you know anything about the availability for automatic applications if you would include that. I would imagine they must be different. Thanks, -JoeB

I have a Quaife, and so far I'm quite happy with it. I don't notice a big difference launching the car, but I didn't really have a big wheel hop or noticeable torque steer problem before I got it. The gear type lsd, which is what the Quaife is, doesn't lock up the axles like a clutch type lsd, so it isn't quite as effective for launching. However, it's great for cornering. I really feel a difference with it. It helps the car really pull you through corners, especially when the inside tire is almost completely unloaded.

As for chattering, the Quaife doesn't make a sound, which is one of it's selling points. I haven't had any maintenance issues, and I've had the lsd for over a year and a half.

Joe, I've only heard of lsd applications for manual transmissions.

where do we get this quaife? I've heard great things bout their diffs. They are supposedly the exact opposite of open.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

I thought that LSDs were only for manual transmissions but recently heard they are for automatics as well. I'm probably not looking for the Quaife. I don't plan on doing any autocross or anything. My main concern is trying to get traction on a straight launch. -JoeB

After my last post, I also found out that there were LSD applications for automatic transmissions. I don't know if there are any for Camry/Solara applications, but it would be worth looking into. Joe, it sounds like the Kaaz LSD would be a good solution for you, based on your last statement.

I've decided to go with the Kaaz LSD :black: . I was quoted at $950 shipped and that includes the Kaaz gear oil too. I'm just awaiting call from CTM Motorsports to confirm when item will be shipped. I'm excited as heck and everything for this project is now falling into place. :black:

I wasn't aware that a LSD was a factory option. Anyways I have the Kaaz and its pretty ruff untill the oil warms up. On the track though it was bullet proof and I could pick up the throttle way early in the corners.

The Kaaz is probably the strongest and most aggresive LSD out there but it isn't as smooth as some of the others.

I've never heard of this as an option, either. Did it show up on your invoice? How much was it?

8) 8) Under the options it called traction control. Works under the same principal as limited slip. I can turn it on or off with a buton on my console.

When on if one wheel slips both tires provide traction until the transmission no longer senses wheel spin. Works like a charm.. I can burn both tires from 0 to 25 mph at will in drive..

Are we on the same sheet of music?? 8)

Completely different, traction control does not send power to both tires, it detects wheel spin and cuts power thru timing, fuel or brakes or a combination of the three. That is a generic description, each manufator is a little different. Some cars have LSD and traction control both.

OK, your real close. Toyota says: "Traction Control
The sophisticated Toyota system is an all-speed design which utilizes both brake and engine throttle control. Traction control helps to avoid slippage of the driving wheels, which tends to happen during starting and acceleration on slippery surfaces and to maintain an optimal driving force according to the road surface conditions. The system eliminates the need for a subtle accelerator pedal operation and helps ensure vehicle control when starting or accelerating on slippery roads."

Guess I better start looking for that LSD as well. Any idea where I might find one. A good one of course.

Credit card in the ready!
