18s or 20s wheels?

18s or 20s wheels?

Postby michaels artic frost » Sun Mar 14, 2004 10:36 pm

I need some advice. I planning on getting some 18s or 20s and can't seem to make up my mind. I know that if I go with 18s, then I would need 225/40. What if I went with 20s? 20" Wheel/Tire Pack (255/35/20)??? I don't know if this is too big or not. But, I saw the new TRDs chrome and they just don't do for me. Perhaps I need to have them put 18s on my car and then see for myself. There's just too much gap, has anyone dropped or added 18s or 20s to theirs. I'd be very interested to know.

Thanks!

I actually spent a while at my local wheel/tire dealer. First of all, 20s do fit (comfortably) with a 225/35/20 tire. Let me tell you...20's look perfect on our cars because we have such a HUGE wheel well. But after all the experimenting around, i decided to go with 19s with a 225/35/19 tire, they still fill it up good and look awesome while giving more play if you were to hit a big bump. By the way michaels_artic...what wheel are you interested in?

I agree with you 100% about the huge wheel well and 20s would leave no clearance. So thanks for the advise. Well taken. I was looking to get 18s because 19s tires are too hard to find and plus they cost more. I'm gonna end up going with these below. Check em out.

They look just like the new TRD ones. And about how you said 19s are hard to find and cost more...19" wheels are just as plentifle as 18s. and as for the cost, you can actually get some 19s that cost less than 18s. Just gotta look around and do some research.

I agree with this totally... those do look like the TRD rims...BUT...

If you are trying to eliminate the gap in the wheel well than the best way to achieve that goal would be to lower your car... putting a bigger rim will only lessen the gap a little...not as much as dropping it down would!

I think that going to 19's would be a bigger difference than just going to 18's ( looks wise ) but you would also lose some speed ( not much but enough ) ... IMHO 20's are sweet but more for a show car not a performance mod but maybe thats what you are going for.... my suggestion would be

Nice 18's for performance ( light rims not chromed heavy ones )

chromed 20's for show if they fit ( most have spinners though )

19's would be a middle of the road choice...

Try out tirerack.com for looking at how rims would look on your car ( I think they only offer 18's to fit our cars though and they told me thats all that would fit!!! )

In my opinion, those 20" rims look NASTY! The OEM rims are even better than those. The TRD ones are far better.

18s, 19s, or 20s

Postby michaels artic frost » Wed Mar 17, 2004 12:28 am

20s look PHAT on our 04 Solara, however there's no clearance for bumps and there's way too many pots holes in da roads. I'm really tempted to get 20s...I just don't know how rougher the car rides. Anyone with 20s on their solara...give me some advice. I know get 18s is like settling...Again 20s looks soooooo PHAT. I spoke with my local Toyota service and they do not recommend 20s because too much weight may cause problems with the axle in the long run and they would need to replaced much, much faster then 18s or 19s. They recommended me to go no higher then 19s. Still lost in space..........lol. I just don't know about the roughness with 20s, and the long term effect of a heavier wheel. Lost in space.........decisions...decisions.

Thanks again for all the inputs and follow ups.

I wish i knew what size tire the guy on cardomain has on those 20s...and i do agree, those arent the best looking wheels, but definitely enhance the apperance of the car.
