Retrofit HID's are a little too pricey for my budget, thats why I went with www.hoen-usa.com bulbs.

And for what its worth my neighbour has the xenondepot kit in his GX470 and Acura RSX. The RSX kit works great, the H11 kit in his GX has been giving him weird light color issues, one side is white the other is greenish tint.

Novice here... but is everyone replacing both their low beams and high beams with the H11's ???

Will it be just as good to just replace the low beams, or do I need to do both?

Thanks guys!

Also, would someone also mind posting some install instructions? Do I need to remove the battery to access the right bulbs?

Thanks guys!

HID????

Postby NOBOOST » Tue Mar 09, 2004 10:28 am

I would caution anyone on doing a HID retrofit on a non HID light housing!!!

HID's require the right housing to work the right way...specifically by law to have HID's on a car they must be auto leveling and no retro kit will do this

the last thing you want to do is blast someone with a HID light because they are aimed the wrong way ( and it is very hard to maintain proper aiming in a retrofit kit) .

PLUS the optics on a non hid headlamp is way different than a hid headlamp ( lens/reflector...

They are very hard to install the correct way and require relays/bulbs/ballasts,etc...

I think they would look/perform badass if you did them the right way though ...

Does the european solara or japanese solara come with HID's? because that would probably be the only way to do them right

FYI... I had HID's on my jetta and have had many talks with various people in the lighting buisness about the issues above.

HID Retro-fit / HOEN bulbs

Postby howd » Thu Mar 11, 2004 7:56 am

NOBOOST has it right. The HID retro-fit is risky. You can be ticketed and the primary reason they will be noticed is because of bad aim. Your friend Bubba sits in the back seat or you cart home a new 36" TV in the trunk and the headlights will point noticeably higher.

The Solara is a US only car, so no overseas headlight system exists (that I know of).

The HOEN or other maker (GE, TOSHIBA, PHILIPS) blue light bulbs offer a nice upgrade for lighting appearance. Be careful of any higher wattage bulb. It will be brighter, but you could end up doing damage to the plastics/components inside the lamp. Also, as a general rule, the higher the wattage the shorter the life of the bulb. Any of these bulbs can be installed without removing any part of the car.

Bulb specs -

Low-beam - H11 (55W)
Hi-beam - 9005 (aka HB3) (60W)
Foglight - H10 (aka 9145) (45W)

Also for a very cool, distinctive look, try the PHILIPS Silvervision bulb for the Turn function (3457). The silver coating completely hides the amber turn function (when not lit) and cleans up the outboard appearance, especially on a dark body-color.

Hope this helps...

Just because a website/company claims dot approved dont believe it... What cars are they approved for ?? ALL cars??? well that is tall BS because some cars have self leveling headlamps and some do not... no toyota has them ( that I am aware of ) .

putting higher wattage bulbs in your housing WILL melt your wiring harness and may even do more damage than that... Putting HID's in your car may fry your harness and if done the wrong way ... fry your electrical system... and toyota WILL know what you did and not cover the repairs.

I WANT HID's in my car...probably more than anyone else her but I will only do it the right way... I think the lighting on my stock 04 se sport is actually quite good but having driven with HID's now for 2 years it is not good enough... I may try the silverstars...for now

I have the Hoen www.hoen-usa.com and am extremely happy with them and their service is top notch. They offer connectors also if you want to run high watt but they even say dont go over 80w regardless.

Source for PHILIPS H11 HID bulbs ?

Postby nsx1164 » Sat Nov 13, 2004 7:57 am

Does anyone have/know of a source for PHILIPS H11 HID bulbs ??

Looking for PHILIPS bulbs, not alternatives (McCulloch, etc).

Thanks.

I've had HID retrofits on one of my cars since 2001, and have yet to be stopped/ticketed/etc. Properly done they should be fine, although they DO lack the self-levelling feature.

The h11 took me forever to find since they're pretty much brand new, but the 9005's should be at your local auto shop...I think the 9005's are also called HB3's. The Solara looks nice with the blue!

I can get 9005 for the fog lights? I don't need the H10? isn't the High beam 9005 as well?

regular xenon light bulbs consumes more power to create brighter lighting.
PROS:
1. cheap
2. easy to replace
CONS:
1. light bulb easy to burn out
2. it's NOT really brighter than stock light (at least i cna't tell the difference.)
3. it melt down socket or wires easily.

real HID/Xenon conversion kits uses more advance technology to make light by some weird chemical reaction. sorry, i don't remember the detail. it's something like burning some gas inside the light bulb.
Anyway,
PROS:
1. it’s AMAZING bright.
2. It requires less power.
3. Light bulb’s life is VERY LONG! If I didn’t remember wrong, it’s five times longer than regular light bulb.
4. it looks so cool when u turn on the light. (it’s flashing~)
CONS:
1. it’s better to have professional install it. It’s high volt stuff; u don’t’ wnana HID burn ur car.
2. Too expensive.
3. It might lose some of ur factory warranty (depends on how picky ur dealer is.).

I get my done by re-base 9006 HID kits.
It’s 8000k. many ppl say it looks good, but I think it’s nasty. I should had got some other color.
Come to my cardomain, I get some pix.
