Clarion's Sound Quality

Clarion's Sound Quality

Postby LuckyVal3 » Wed Feb 04, 2004 12:50 am

i was told the clarion's don't have more than a bass and treble setting and i'm wondering if that's gonna be enough to provide a clear sound. does anyone have experience with them? and am i going to need an outside equalizer because i'd rather buy something else if the headunit doesn't have good enough sound quality. i was looking at the alpine's minus the monitors but i'm bout to get a good deal on the clarion so i might do it if the sounds right. thanks for the reply - this is the deciding factor in buying it or not - thanks again

if you want the best sq, go with alpine, eclipse, denon, nakamichi, or mcintosh. pioneer is pretty good too.

Clarion is a good unit if you plan to use an external EQ. THeir 3-Band EQ blows! The bass and mids sound muffled... I was running the EQ on CUSTOM but it sucked... so now I'm running with the EQ off and the sound is very crisp, although I have very little lows (no subs anyhow).

Eclipse seems to have the best sound quality!! I should have waited for the Eclipse unit I was originally going to get instead of rushing into the Clarion trap =P But you do pay extra for that Eclipse quality!!

so u only have the clarion hooked up? no outside eq or anything else, huh? see i got an offer to get the clarion 835 for $450 - that's a sweet ass deal but i really didn't want to put anymore money into sq - i wanted to put the rest of my cash into springs and struts.

are u going to put in a sub? and if so do u think running a crossover to ur sub will clear up ur sound? is the clarion alright with the highs cuz i am going to hook up a sub?

If you have good amps and speakers you shouldn't need much in the way of an EQ. I run mine with the EQ off, NF +5. IMHO, and based on experience, the EQ is usually used to make up for speaker weaknesses by dumb kids that are trying to save money on interior speakers while trying to build ghetto sleds (2000 watts to the subs, deck power to the mids and highs).

That being said EQ’s do have a good use; to overcome problems in the interior of the car. (EG: Panels resonant frequency, cloth sound absorption, etc.) If your system is properly designed you shouldn’t need an EQ unless you plan to compete SQ.

Clarions offer good SQ for the price. There are better (EG: Eclipse, McIntosh, Nakamichi(sp?)). Clarions have a 24bit D/A and a better than 105db S/N from CD, so sound quality shouldn’t be that big off an issue. As for lack of bass or treble, get good amps & speakers :). I don’t personally have trouble with either being weak LOL.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Decent price.

I am planning to get components, amps, and mini subs soon. I'll replace the fronts, and turn the 6x9 to 5" subs while making holes in the rear area for 6.5 and tweeters. I still have to check if the speakers are ok mounted on the sides of the rear (where the "oh crap" handles are, lol).

Very well said... If you are relying on the EQ for SQ, you have a bad amp/speakers to start with. Over use of an EQ causes bad clipping. Clarion H/Us have pretty good SQ from what I've heard.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.
