CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND CHARCOAL CANISTER

Postby solanehart » Sun Jan 18, 2004 8:24 pm

my check engine light came on and the shop told me the catalytic converter and the charcoal canister needed to be replaced. they said it would cost about 1000 or so for parts and labor. just wondering if there are any other places i can buy these parts for cheaper and how much it costs to have them installed. (by the way its a 2000, 4 cyl)

I don't believe that those 2 parts have anything to do with each other. If your check engine light came on I doubt it was for both of them. You might have someone else take a look at it.

i have already had 2opinions 1 was from a shiester A$$ place and he told me it was my o2 sensor and the 2nd place was a toyota dealership. i took it in for a 100,000 mile service and they looked at the check engine light and said it was these two things.

i my experience, its usually one or the other, not both.
i would start off with the charcoal canister since its much less expensive than the cat. if the check engine light (CEL, or MIL (Malfuntion Indicator Lamp)) comes back on, then i'd say do the cat.

and if it is the cat, just get a high flow one. No reason to spend $600 plus for a regular one when a high flow one shouldn't be more than $250

Take it to other shop and see what they say. i highly doubt it will be both too.

my friend took his bimmer to this shop and the mechainc were like the suspension have problem on the sensor, and it will cost him $700 to fix. So we took his car to the cross street a european car pro, they loook at it and say $35 just to replace the relay. It works fine since after......the great thing is he saved $665
