Steering wheel distress

Steering wheel distress

Postby ozone » Wed Jun 01, 2011 10:05 pm

So my wife's beige steering wheel is looking a little less than new. Anyone know a good place to get it recovered? Has anyone changed the color to black? If so, how did it look? Did you change the plastic around the column too?

How about an aftermarket wheel?

What about the air bag?

Can you get aftermarket wheels with airbags?

Chime in and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

When you say you took it off, you mean you took off the steering wheel or you took the leather off of the steering wheel?

I took off the steering wheel and sent it to a guy that recovered it in black. It looks great. But when I put it on the car and was ready to paint the airbag, my wife preferred the beige. I didn't care for the guy who did it the first time and don't want to have him do another one for me (I have a spare wheel).

Personally, I would prefer to proceed with black, but I would paint the whole column too. I'm afraid the beige will just get dirty again real quick.

i wanted to take the leather off and re-upholster it but that wouldve cost me almost 300$, thats why i just had it shot painted beige.
It does get dirty faster than black of course, but its easily wiped off with a towel since its paint.
my interior is beige so i wanted to keep the same look... i dono how black wouldve looked.
good luck

I went to car quest got leather/vinyl upholstery paint, tapped off the surrounding parts, and put a couple of coats on. Looks great, but it will wear over time you might have to touch it up every few years or so. My Integra still looks great but the Solara is a little worn in some spots, but I drive it the most. 15 min fix, and car quest has like every interior color available.
