Need advise

Postby duckbro1993 » Thu Jun 09, 2011 12:48 am

I know you guys must be sick of the stupid rookie but I could really use some Solara expert help. I just installed my Injen short ram intake today. It sounds awesome. Other than that, I'm all stock. I'd like to do more to get some speed going. What should my next project be? I want to take baby steps. What would be the next step? I really appreciate the help guys.
Thanks,
Bobby

First step would be research. Lots of info on the net...if you don't how/what to modify to make more power, you shouldn't be doing it. Next, read this viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37723 and past topics

:agree: thats what i found to look into on my camry... great thread, and i would agree also that you should start with intake and exhaust then think of other stuff after those... and dont forget starting with exterior upgrades instead of engine upgrades is always fine also thats what im doing.

i would get your hands on a second hand supercharger, a full exhaust and headers is going to run you some money anyway. id do it big the first time and supercharge it

Supercharging right away would be the worst idea possible. Headers are also not an entry level mod and provide no gains unless youre running high hp and boost.

Start with an intake and cat back exhaust, maybe some lighting mods, then suspension (shocks, springs, rear sway bar), then appearance (wheels, tires, lip kit). Fit in a nice stereo somewhere too. Save the big mods for when you learn a little more about the car. once you really get a feel for what your goals are, them go for the big mods(sc, headers, gm knock sensors, fuel mods, piggy back a/f o2 simulators, bbk, ETC.)

Find after market and forced induction posts from the experienced guys, we've put a ton of valuable info on here that you can learn from.

Trying to make our cars fast is kind of useless. So I would skip the S/C, headers and other engine mods. But a catback is almost a must because it improves the aesthetic side of our cars and the sound.

Then, our cars are 4x4's in stock form. So get some coilovers or lowering springs/struts. It WILL make a big difference.

Next, get some 18" wheels. Getting some wheels is the biggest improvement a car can get.

After that, a lip kit would make it seem even lower and adds aggressiveness.

Some DIY's, like independent fogs, black housing headlights, debadge, HID's etc.

By then, you would have a wonderful car.

^^^ They've been known to fudge their numbers a bit. I read an article where they actually had a platic compressor wheel from the stage 2 kit in the stage 1 housing and this wasn't on a stock engine. It had high temp blinker fluid installed. And muffler bearings

COMPOSITE compressor, NOT run-o-the-mill PLASTIC! (That would just be silly...)

By the way, use of normal ball bearings can cause thermal soak related failure on those mufflers if you are generating ultra-high-temp exducer gasses and I'd recommend using ceramic bearing or well lubricated journal bearings in such applications....

(Blinker fluid? I went with solid-pack resin cooled and no longer have any leakage when I turn. Highly recommended as well... although WAY more costly than going to LED's... but then you have that pesky resistor to worry about, and it generates a lot of heat from parasitic energy loss. :-? )

Seriously though Bobby, don't let all this "BS" throw you off! There is some really good advice in here (including this thread, like hskrsolara's remarks) that are great suggestions.

Start slow. Keep your mods basic and balanced. Do your research in here. KNOW that it is often NOT the big, major, complex and costly mods that are most noticed and enjoyed by an owner... but the incremental things you do to make your vehicle personalized and always just a BIT BETTER than it WAS before! Satisfaction is not always found in what we THINK we want or need, but in the process of accomplishing SOMETHING that is a (in your words) "baby step" improvement over what you had before.

...back to the "shenanigans"...

lmao....nice comments.......but for real after intake, exhaust, headers....the only other place to go with is supercharging or turbo if its stick.
