eBay headers, opinions

Good luck with that. I was considering it, but the ECU uses 3 O2 sensors. You would need a fourth for the engine to run properly on the stock ECU with dual exhaust. It might be ok, if you just did it, but theoretically, I think you would need to go stand alone.

If you buy the OBX then you would just eliminate the y-pipe and run custom exhaust from each header end, through a couple of flex couplers to the back. You need to find a place to put a second muffler or use a single muffler as your crossover. In principle, this is easy. In practice it's much more difficult than it looks.

I don't recall the design of the Solara at the back, but I know on my Corolla, I couldn't run the second pipe tail pipe on the opposite side of where the first one runs because the gas tank filler tube is in the way. You better check out a path on your car before you start.

what? why would you need a 4th o2 sensor? The 3rd sensor is in place to make sure the cat is working...if the ecu is designed to run on 3 sensors, it runs on 3 sensors

nope wont pass....i get mine the cool way lol pay extra and get it done :wink:

brotha id be so down if i had a smog hook up, i live in San diego so if you can refer me to anyone id be indebted to you, hell id even come up to LA to smog it if i can lol

one more thing is i wanna set up my car to run true dual exhaust, how should i go about this assuming i get the OBX?

if you run true duals, you better run pretty small piping...otherwise you will lose a crap ton of torque. Really, it would be a waste of money if you aren't F/I.

Both set of headers are made by OBX, as we all know OBX makes replicas. The best replica is the jpp headers, the other set was made by Megan. As for megan replicas the fitment is good as long as you drill out the flange holes out because the chrome makes the holes smaller that's the only thing that you have to do for proper fitment. The megan headers didn't come with a egr tube, so you need to custom the egr tube other then at there okay for the price. And yes I've install a lots of jpp headers and a few sets of megan headers.

I haven't messed with this, so I don't know. I'm just going on theory. I think that providing the catalytic converter with half as much exhaust gas will effect it's performance and the existing O2 sensor won't read properly. Otherwise, catalytic converters wouldn't need to be sized for the system. At a minimum the cat should heat up slower due to half the mass missing, maybe it won't ever reach operating temperature.

You should still be able to run closed loop since you have the other two sensors, but the third one might mess with the fuel ratio. It seems that if the third O2 sensor is there to measure the health of the cat, then it is looking for a rich condition which will destroy the cat. Hmmm. Now that I think this through, I think you may be right. Worst case, it shouldn't be any worse than deleting the cat. But with that in mind, it seems to me that anyone who uses the OBX header should have a check engine light, because the downstream O2 sensor won't show any difference from the upstream sensors, indicating that the cat is bad. Is that the case, you OBX people?

Not sure I understood you. Are you saying that the "cheap" eBay headers are actually made by OBX, are copies of a Megan header and that your opinion is that they are fine as long as you drill out the holes and accommodate the missing EGR?

I'm kind of bummed. It looks like there are only three choices. OBX = no cat. Tuning Pro's = no EGR and JPP = buy a second car for that price.

Am I missing any?

YES.^^

Not an opinion its a fact. Been there done that, I was going to get the proto type set up from megan back in 2006 but I didn't get the stock manifold to them in time so some one else got the proto type set for free. And for your no cat dilemma just but a O2 simulator from URD or spark plug anti fouler. Try to do a little more research it been talk about countless times.

Correct me if im wrong fellas, but if those ebay (megan) headers are mounted the obx cat back will not bolt up to this correct? if thats the case i really dont see a sense in gettting this. the whole point is to have a full exhaust not just free flow and then major restriction.

What makes you think that the rest of the stock exhaust system is a major restriction?

Look at the gains people have reported from cat back installs!

I agree.
OEM = 2.25"
OBX = 2.5"

Even my Greddy Evo catback exhaust is 2.5", way better than the OEM exhaust sizin'.
