new to forum 2003 solara, idle and cruise problems.

The car purrs once its running , but keeping it idleing is a big problem as of late.
We have the 2003 2.4 liter and any suggestions would be appreciated as to what approach to take to correct this.
Once going down the road most of the time everything is fine, ......unless I engage cruise.
Cruise works ok , but then all of a sudden it disconnects itself , the rpms go up and the speedometer drops to zero.. They both may bounce back and forth a few times, then they settle in and work correctly .
Do either of these problems seem familiar to you, and what was the correction.
I have an appointment with a mechanic this tuesday, but wanted to see if I could get an insight as to which area this problem might spring from.
I know some to the sensors are expensive so I don't want to just throw new ones out there withoutl a pretty good idea I am in the right place.
