Transponder Key Valet

Transponder Key Valet

Postby PlayaDelReyDave » Thu Apr 14, 2011 1:05 pm

I have a 2002 Solara, have two master keys, and am interested in getting a valet key (don't know what happened to the original). I've read the forums, called around, did research online, and here's what I've discovered:

Local Toyota dealerships in Los Angeles charge anywhere from $150 to $250 for a replacement key.

The best quote I've received is $49 for the valet key (part # 89786-60050), with cutting, plus $115 to program it. The places I've found online don't sell blank valet transponder keys (just regular blank transponder keys). Here's what I'm thinking. I can buy the valet key, then try programming it myself. I found these instructions. Does this work? Thanks.

I lost my original Toyota key a while back and have been using a silver backup with a Toyota emblem, that was given to me by the previous owner. In order for the process mentioned above to work, the original key with the black casing would be necessary right?

my understanding is that the master key is black and the valet key is grey. you need the master key, you have to use the master key in order to program new keys or remotes to your ride. and just fyi, not all cars let you program this stuff yourself, +1 point for solara!

Thanks for the reponses on this. Here's the frustrating part. I already have two Master Keys already, and don't need another master. I need a valet key. I called Toyota dealers, and the price, I kid you not, best price, that is, was $160. They wanted $115 for the programming of the key, plus about $45 for the key. If I were to order a blank transponder key, then have it cut, then program it using the instructions, my understanding is that that key would open the glove compartment and trunk. But I'm looking for a valet key. Is there a way to buy a blank key and have it programmed as a valet key?

as far as i know the programming has nothing to do with the amount of access allowed on the vehicle, its the cut. a valet key is cut diiferently so that it does not open the trunk or glovebox, but still works the door locks and ignition cylinder.
