Loss of Power?

Loss of Power?

Postby Jabraltar » Thu Apr 07, 2011 10:45 am

Well I have no idea if anything is wrong with my car but everytime I stomp the gas it feels like I'm missing power and all I can hear is a noise that sounds like this: phhhfffffffffffffff....hopefully somebody can sound it out and understand what I mean. I've noticed that since I bought the car the power has declined a bit and was wondering if this sound was normal at all. Also the gas pedal used to be stiffer and I wouldn't have to hit it so hard...???? Thanks in advance!

I could try to make one but I'm not sure if it will pickup the noise over my intake

I also forgot to mention that when I mat it, 9/10 it smells like dirty exhaust

Okay so I found this on popularmechanics.com and I'm thinking that would be the exact problem. I'd like a second opinion though from you experienced guys.

FFFFffff ttttFFFF ffff ttttFFFFffff tttt
WHERE: Under the hood.
WHEN: Most noticeable at idle.
WHAT: An exhaust manifold gasket has failed, venting hot exhaust gases to the air.
URGENCY: It's not getting better on its own. The blowtorch of corrosive gases will eventually damage the manifold. Oh, by the way: Carbon monoxide from the leak may make you drowsy or dead.
FIX: Replace the exhaust manifold gasket before the leak eats a hole in the manifold.

Agree with the above. And just to be sure it's not something else...

Hissing while braking: brake power booster
Hissing while turning: power steering
Sucking while turning: power steering

But the strong exhaust odor pretty much gives it away. Ever swap headers and thought, "Hmm, let's rev the engine a few times just to hear and feel what it's like to have super-free-flowing-exhaust"? Yeah, it's kinda like that. You should take advantage of your current situation and rev a few Ricers at the line. :)

haha thanks Dr J...I'm thinking of just getting OBX headers and redoing everything from there all the way down and back to the muffler because that has a hole in it too. Never done a swap but I'm excited to see and feel the results seeing as I guess I've never felt the full power of my Solara. Woohooo!
