Which Struts to go with TRD Springs?

Postby Texasolara86 » Mon Mar 21, 2011 3:58 pm

After some solid searching, there seems to be inconclusive opinions of which struts to go with. I know the TRD/Bilstein struts are discontinued, and most go with either Tokico or KYB. My friend's 2001 Volvo S60 has KYB struts and I absolutely loved them, but I know its a different car and different driver feel (and he's on stock suspension). I have heard many horror stories about the Tokico brand from various motorheads(domestic and import), so I'm hesitant to purchase them. I like the KYB brand, but most here say that the KYB struts for our car are simply an OEM replacement. Any other options out there? I will not be going the coilover route. Thanks for your input in advance!

No need to get TRD struts. KYB's are excellent quality and would be more than enough to support TRD springs.

not sure where you're hearing the horror stories on the Tokico (blues)...they were the consensus with most of the OG's on here to mate up with the tein s-techs. they are higher quality than the KYB's, but not sure about the price difference. KYB's have typically been a toyota OEM replacement...not what I would go with for an upgrade.

Bilstein (trd) and tokico are definitely proven higher quality struts than the KYB oem replacements. I put KYB in my wifes buick regal, I put tokico blues in my solara and bilsteins(trd) in my FJ because they are user proven. Listen to autozone, you'll buy KYB or monroe. Listen to the board/users you'll buy tokico or bilstein.

He's asking for TRD's but couldn't find them. Now Greg's got them for sale. Why would you steer the OP elsewhere?

I wouldn't buy KYB's, you might as well buy stock struts in that case, are you trying to upgrade your suspension or stay stock. If it were me I'd buy coilovers, trd struts, tokico's, or if i want slightly better then stock kybs. Ive gone threw all those set up's.

If you can read, the thread title it clearly says "which struts". And he clearly asked in the original post which struts we can recommend him. I simply gave him what he wanted.

OP, I've had 2 sets of KYB struts, one on my old Accord (with Eibach springs) and one one my Solara (with Tein). Both handle the lowering perfectly as long as the lowering doesn't go below 1.7-1.8 inches. They feel very comfortable and you don't lose too much comfyness compared to stock. My friend also has a set and he's beyond than satisfied with them. KYB struts are the best bangs for the buck imo.

For Tokico, I don't know where did you heard the bad stories but they are one of the highest aftermarket quality struts available in the market. They could be pretty expensive though. For TRD/Bilstein, they are of course one of the best also but also more expensive. It is your choice which one you want, but as I said the KYB are more than sufficient for TRD springs.

I'm trying to upgrade I guess. I plan on getting TRD lowering springs. I'm basically looking for better overall suspension and driving dynamics due to the SLE trim feeling very old grandpa boat cadillacish. My dad's Honda Pilot even feels like it has a better turning radius than the Solara! I used to love the comfy, cushiony ride that it gave me. However, lately I have realized as I learn more about cars and becoming a car enthusiast rather than simply caring about getting me from point A to point B, that I'm shifting to wanting more performance feel. Is there a good way to get the driving dynamics and maintain some of the comfort? I'm never going to really track my car since it is my daily driver, but I will be definitely doing some spirited driving. I'm just looking for an overall increased driver feel and confidence, especially on sharp turns. I have plans for a rear sway bar in the future too. As far as tokicos are concerned, I'm basing it off of opinions from friends who have tried them on their cars and thought they were not worth the money spent.

and as far as TRD struts, I have read that both the struts and the strut mounts are discontinued...I would be hesitant to deal with that hassle.

I provided the link to get the TRD struts. Why aren't you getting them? Greg is probably the most hassle-free guy on this forum, and many will attest to his honesty as a seller. It's his business. Now get them. :-)

I've installed trd struts and springs on various cars and every single one has had no complaints and nothing but positive comment. if you're looking for stock ride Tokico and trd(bilstein) are not for you. do some research on what people that's had trd struts think. when you buy struts it's always best to replace the strut mounts. if they're installed right with new mount you shouldn't have any issues, i have yet to have a customer come back complaining about noise, bbq bob and jetbtkng both track there camry and solara and they both have had no issues. I don't know what else to tell you.

You've all pretty much answered my questions, and I'm not buying the struts right now cause I don't have the money to dish out for them. Hopefully sometime soon though! Thanks for the input everyone!
