Road noise, Anyone has wind through windows problem?

Postby mig0s » Wed Mar 02, 2011 4:28 pm

So I just realized my car is kinda noisy on the highway. Of course my SRI and free flow muffler don't help, but there's a wind leak in my windows that I can feel on the highway. I can't actually "see" the leak. Anyone knows how to fix it? I've been driving like that for months and now it's getting on my nerves lol..

Most likely coming from the area around your mirrors.

i hear a little wind coming past my windows too, seems to be mainly the rear edge of the glass in my car. one time i went through a car wash with high pressure water jets and it actually spit a few drops of water past the drivers window along the rear edge. it doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it, but i would suspect the rubber around the door jam that the window presses against is the problem, if not that then its the window not being pressed against the door jam hard enough and its a problem in the door. so in short the problem is either the door or the car lol

Depending on where the leak is actually occurring, you may be able to
adjust the door latch striker (the hook on the door jam) further toward
the interior of the car to tighten the fit of the window against the seal.

If it's just noise and not actually leaking water or anything you're better
off just turning up the tunes or loudly conversing with friends to drown
out the wind noise. :D

The design of the Solara's frameless windows is inherently susceptible
to wind noise.

Most cars without a door frame has this issue of wind noise. Even my 2G DSM had that issue but no leaks what so ever. Noise is coming around where the mirror wraps around the window.

^ Yeah, Subarus are the same way too. It's the design, not just the car.

Yep. Not much you can do except get used to it =b I hear it every now and then, but since there's no leak I don't let it bother me.

I've had the same problem since I picked my car up last year in May. I took it in to our family friends auto glass shop and him and his workers inspected it and said the seals are fine. It's a super high pitch whistle that drives me nuts and I'm assuming it's coming in from just above the mirror because it also leaks a tiny bit in a high pressured car wash. Someone needs to figure out how to fix it!!!! lol

^You can probably just add some foam tape or something to the
seal to make the fit tighter where it's leaking.

on other cars engineers have made the window actually raise a bit after the door is shut, automatically. and when you go to open the door the window drops that same little bit. i've seen this on a friends mid 90's bmw and i've heard of some newer mustangs doing the same thing. its a small issue with the design on the solara, i say small because it seems nobody is really complaining about water leaking, just some wind noise at highway speed usually. i think that even if you fix this issue by buying new gasket materials for the door jam, it will eventually return. if it bothers you too much just do what 99BlackSandv6 suggests and add some thin material around the door jam where the window seals (or is supposed to seal). but as long as mine doesn't leak when it rains im leaving it alone. i like to cruise with the windows down anyway 8)

Yeah fair enough in the summer I never have the windows up anyways. Hell even when it's like -10 I drive with the windows down sometimes lol I suppose their could be a million things worse with the car so a small wind leak is fine with me.
