I Hate My TRD Struts

I Hate My TRD Struts

Postby mdatrdcam » Mon Dec 13, 2010 3:15 pm

Well the front one's at least. I've just finished my second day of reading through 39 pages of archived posts related to the topic of noisy TRD struts and I honestly can't seem to find a definitive answer. I'm just curious as to whether anyone has figured out a fix for the clunking of the front struts or do they really just eat up strut mounts this fast? I've had them on for about 8 months now and have only had approximately 2-3 weeks of noise free operation. I'm thinking about replacing the strut mounts for a second time since i installed them and see if this fixes the problem, but i don't think it will. I have been using the monroe strut mounts that were recommended as a possible fix.

Also what exactly is the vibration isolator, besides just a piece of rubber? Can it be replicated? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, to the few other's that have recently installed them, what are your experiences? Good, bad or indifferent?

Thank you to everyone that responds and i assure you that i did do my homework.

Yikes, I hadn't heard that it does that. I have rear TRD strut/springs but not front ones.

Good luck!.. I have nooo idea.

Yeah, the rear one's should be fine. I have just been reading a bunch of old threads that talk about the problems people have with their front TRD struts, me being one of them. I just cant find a definite solution to any of my problems. If i cant figure it out i might just replace the front struts with tokico blue's. I really dont want to because the bilstein's are so stiff but Im just growing very tired of the constant problems.

my car just started clunking at the left front just a couple days ago, i have tokico struts.
I suspect it was a couple major pot holes i didnt avoid over the last few weeks.
Im thinking its either the strut mount, just the bearing in the strut mount, or a ball joint.
either way ill be getting mine repaired soon (i hope).

the trd's dont have rubber bumpers, buy some fronts, & because the trd's have bigger shafts u have to ream out the holes in the bumpers so they slide over the shaft, that should stop it from bottoming out......

Come guy, if you do that then you gotta ream out the bearing out too, that's not gonna work.

Yeah, theyre not bottoming out. I believe the TRD's have internal bumpstops so reaming out the stock ones isn't really necessary. They are just making noise. I believe it is the strut mounts making the noise. I'm just curious as to whether these struts really eat up strut mounts this quickly? Actually someone has been able to source a complete TRD isolator kit for me, so I'm just waiting to hear back from him and then I'll let you guys know if the isolator helps and what exactly it is.
Thanks for the responses though.

dude im not talkig about the bearing, im talking about the rubber bumpers that go over the shaft, trd's have bump stops buit in but they bottom out causing a klunk, he needs to put exterior bump stops on the front struts & it will stop the clunking, if he tracks the car then live with it , but if its a daily driver then install the bump stops & he;ll be happy...........

^^^^ i installed new eibach springs and tokico struts and they have been great, but now (7months later) im getting a clunk from my front passenger wheel, its not the strut bottoming out, its more like something is loose and rattling but its more of a clunking sound. anyway i dont mean to thread jack im just stating how tokico's are doing for me for comparison purposes to the original trd strut clunking issue.

^^^^yeah bro for me its the rear, the fronts dont clunk unless i make a full turn and then its more of a pop, try tightening the middle nut that the is visible when you pop the hood, my buddy suggests torquing it if it keeps getting loose, thats what im gonna try for the rears because the other day the left rear started clunking too

he was talking about trd struts, they have a built in bumper but they do bottom out, & it might feel like strut mounts may be bad....

I finally took this advice a few days ago and tightened the nut on top of the strut shaft, it fixed it. so my Tokico's dont clunk after all.
