seafoam smoke out of headers?

seafoam smoke out of headers?

Postby mig0s » Wed Jul 28, 2010 6:19 pm

I posted this in the seafoam thread but no one bothered to read/reply...

Can someone explain/help?

I just did the seafoam with 1/2 to the brake booster, 1/4 to the engine and 1/4 to the gas tank. Everything went well and I got A LOT of smokes out of my exhaust... BUT also a significant amount of smoke out of my headers! It stopped after like 20 minutes when there's no more smoke from my exhausts. Is smoke out of the headers normal? Or is it a loose bolt or something? No CEL codes and car is driving really fine.

Thanks for your help.

Like where the header mounts to the head? sounds like a bad gasket

Yes there... do you mean I got a blown head gasket? I never had smoke coming out of my exhaust and the car is driving totally fine...

He means the gasket that goes between the block and the headers (which is NOT the head gasket).

it pretty much means you got an exhaust leak. the headgasket goes between the block and heads.
are avalons supposed to be this fast?

and is it ok to continue driving like that? The smoke from the header gasket came out slowly so its not a big leak and it shouldnt be a big problem right?

Personally i wouldnt drive it like that, but the gasket doesnt cost much, just go buy a new one take the headers off replace it, and your set.

^^
Can you do me a favor? Please find me the part I need on Ebay because I searched and I don't know what's the name of that specific gasket, so I just wrote "Solara gasket" and many different stuff came up.

Thanks a lot

i'm guessing you need the Exhaust Manifold Gasket, but wait till one of the veteran guys chimes in tho.

Unless you have actual headers which are different in that they are designed to take out exhaust gas as efficiently as possible, you are talking about an exhaust manifold leak. Toyota's come from the factory with exhaust manifolds. If that is the case, I would go to the dealer and get one to fit your car exactly.
Without ammunition, the USAF would be just another very expensive flying club.

If the engine was cold when you started the sea foam process I would not worry too much. Sometimes tiny gaps can occur when the engine is cold and disappear as the engine heats up.

You can re-torque the bolts to tighten things up.

My engine wasn't cold at all... the smoke came out for like 20 minutes!

And guys, if the smoke came out of my headers, is this what I need?

most probably it has been leaking for a while but you never noticed it since the smoke was light... now with sea foam i guess its white and more noticable. i dont see a problem driving with that except for pollution and noise. and it will most probably fade away as the seafoam and gunk burns outs.
its always best to replace it... gaskets are cheap.

where in mtl are u from?
