crankshaft pulley come apart?

crankshaft pulley come apart?

Postby SnivesAtGT » Sun Jun 20, 2010 7:10 pm

This afternoon, when diagnosing some odd noises (squeal type of noises) coming from the engine of my 2001 Solara -- I discovered the noise was coming from the crankshaft pulley that has come apart. The outer pulley that drives the AC compressor and alternator and completely detached from the rubber inner piece.

I obviously need to change this, but am curious if any had seen this before. Should I check out any other things while there, and any advice about getting the crankshaft pulley bolt loose is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

that rubber part is known as the harmonic balancer and is basically designed to take extra vibrations from the crankshaft

sometimes they do deteriorate, but it is extremely rare. It could be an indication of future problems, but it is doubtful. Excessive vibrations from the motor and many other mechanical problems would arise if your crankshaft was actually out of balance. It is most likely wear and tear from the elements.

Just replace it and you should be good.

The easiest way to remove the crankshaft is either with an extremely powerful air impact gun, or by using the starter "bump-start" method.... look it up and you should find some simple instructions on the internet on how to do it

Thanks for the advice. I was able to bump start it off.

Now -- have to wait for the ordered one to come in and replace it.

Thanks,
Ben

I've heard of this happening on Corollas with the 4age engine. You should have replaced it with a lightened aluminum version. It is all one piece.
