That is one nice AE92 you got there. I really miss mine a lot. What a fun car to drive.

Nice 5-Lug conversion too, haven't seen too many of those ;)

Thanks. I've had it for nearly 18 years.

Yes, that means I'm old.

Yup, I'm old. . . 43 to be exact. But it's ok, my wife says I act like I'm 12.

And yes, aluminum is your friend.

I'm hoping I can bring the weight of the engine or at least the front of the car down a little by using a few light weight components (headers, pulleys, etc and maybe by lightening the front bumper and anything else I can find.) I think I might be able to pull 20 lbs or so out. The rest I'll just have to live with.

i love threads like this for discussion, im 48 and have had to lighten up my old dinosaur,a big block chrysler weighs more than 750 lbs,
so it is amazing now what an engine weighs 40 years later, and since the after marked has supplied alot of ALUMINUM parts so i have managed to drop the weight from 3850 lbs curb weight to 3325 curb weight

, one can only imagine how light a person could get one of these solaras :D

Wow! 525 lbs! That's my whole engine! Kudos.

I read an article once in Sport Compact Magazine about a company in Japan called Opera, where they took 800 lbs out of a Honda S2000! I love that kind of stuff too and would love to try some of their techniques on a car some day.

While I'm not a huge fan of Muscle cars, Drew, that car looks bada$$. Is that the one you lightened? I wouldn't mind seeing a bigger pic.

Re: 1MZ- fe weight?

According to the official Toyota papers, the 1MZ service weight* is 348lbs (see picture). The VVT-i 1MZ seemed to lose 2lbs somehow, as it is listed at 346lbs.

Image.

* Service weight is the bare engine filled with oil and coolant

My 1MZ weighed 401lbs on an 8lb pallet with all accessories and engine harness installed. No flywheel or flex plate was present. I used a Fidanza lightweight flywheel, so it only added an additional 9lbs and the 1MZ LOVES to rev with it. I weighed all of the components individually, as well. If you're interested, I'll post those weights as well.

Oh, by the way, I'm Jason from the MR2 boards. I have a 1MZ in my MKII MR2. Just thought I'd let you guys know that, so you're not left wondering who the hell this new guy is. :D

It is available, however, Toyota only recently started listing the engine service mass. The 3VZ paper does not show a weight. The bare weight of the 3VZ is likely to be around 400lbs or more, as it is a very stout engine with huge rods, forged crank, engine cradle, and, of course, an iron block.

Also keep in mind that the weight for the 1MZ listed is for an A/T 1MZ with only a flex plate installed. A M/T 1MZ gets a noticeable increase in weight from both the flywheel and clutch/PP. Same for the 3VZ.

Just remember that on average, M/Ts are considerably lighter than A/Ts, so it all works out.

It's pretty similar in operation to the 1MZ.
