How to re-paint or completely paint Gen 1 Grill

Postby Dr.Jenkins » Tue Apr 13, 2010 9:56 am

Hi,
My 2001 diamond pearl white vert (tan) A/T SLE V6 has some chipped paint on the front grill. I am interested in knowing the best way to repair/repaint chipped chrome paint or DIY paint the entire grill chrome. Any suggestions or old posts would be greatly appreciated.

Also can a Gen 1.5 or Gen 2 grill fit in a Gen 1 front end?

Thanks,

I dont think you can repaint the chrome. However you can sand it down and spray it black or whatever color you like.
Also, the other Gen grills won't fit a Gen1.

There is chrome spray paint you can buy which looks pretty cool. But I doubt it will look as good as the original chrome on your grille.

I think your best option is to paint it a shade of black like the others have suggested. It's hard for black to look bad on a car.

I sanded the grill down and sprayed it with black paint. After a couple weeks the paint of the toyota emblem came off and i left it. Looks good.

I think the chrome grill is a bit too blingy, unless thats what ur going for.

What type of sandpaper did you use? the black/wet one, or just regular 100 grit paper?...

it will chip off after 1 year even if you do 20 coats... i did mine, turned out nice but started chipping again.

i used "chrome" spray paint and 3 coats of clear on top. make sure you tape around where you dont want properly before you start spraying.
