tinting problem

tinting problem

Postby retarded » Wed Oct 29, 2003 4:38 pm

i just got my 04 solara tinted w/ a 5% tint on the rear window and 20% on the rear side windows. After a few days I left it to dry, and smooth out, but on the top portion of the rear window is a darker black strip which left a bad job on the tint, what should I do to fix the tinting job?

Sounds to me like the tinter tried to tint over the infamous black dots on the top of the windshield. Doing that is like tossing a coin over how well it will adhere. There are some tricks tinters use to make it stick better to dots - some sand them down with very fine sandpaper, etc. If you don't want to do that and it isn't sticking well, you could always have them cut away that topmost section. From the outside, it probably won't be too noticeable though I'm not sure on this car....

To those who have tinted the back window on their 2004 Solara:

Did you tint over the topmost black dotted area on the back window?
If so, did the tinter have to sand down the dots or do anything else special?
If the tinter skipped the top section, how does it look from the outside?
How does it look from the inside?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

give it couple of days so it can even out and dry i had the same problem, and after a like 2 weeks it started to get unnoticeable by the dots. There is no such thing as a perfect tinting job. you will always see some small imperfections.

jus my .02 cents

I had the tinting job about 3-4 weeks ago, and the tinter told me to wait for about a week or two for it to dry. Yes, it was the black dots in the top portion of the rear window that did not smooth out. They did try sanding out, and it was still a messy job. THe good thing is I get to come back and see what they could do to fix it. One alternative is suggested was to have the rear window a 0% tint, so that the top portion would look better, but 0% is a bit too dark..haha. Any other suggestions before I take it back???

blazed tell me how it goes after your tinting job and the the black dots on the top of your rear window. For your rear third light, what they should do (what they did with mine), is remove the panels above your rear seats so that they are able to tint the whole window, and not around the light. This was why so many places were charging me more for labor because of this
"extra" job. As far as the black dots, tell me what they did to fix that.

Retarded,

I have an Artic White SE as well. Do you have any pics of your car? I was thinking of only thinking about going 35% all around, and didn't know if it would be dark enough.

yeah "guest", 35 % is a lil too light for my taste, ill try to post some pictures soon. 20% all around would look pretty smooth for the car
