haha...I like how you put that BUT considering you know how to do it, you could try to help the guy out.

It's a very time consuming job and one you shouldn't attempt considering how important it is. In short, to the left of your motor on the bottom there is a black plastic cover where the timing belt is under. You need to take it off and replace the timing belt. If I'm not mistaken, there are markings on the belt and motor and you have to know where to match up the belts. You should do the water pump if you're in there already. Enjoy!

I just did the timing belt for the first time with a very experienced mechanic by my side. I would not do it by yourself the first time. I also had the engine out of the car to make it easier.

Non- interference engine, so he'll be fine either way

And just give yourself an entire day for your first time and just keep your fingers crossed when you fire it back up in regards to timing as it is really easy to set the timing off by a tooth due to the lack of room to work with.

If you are also planning on changing the cam seals, give yourself more time as well, as the bank1 seal is a bitch to get in and out without scratching anything or damaging the seal.

I was just wondering the same thing the other day. I've never done a Timing belt before (my maximas have chains), but I don't mind working on my own cars.

I only have 78,000km on my gen1. Still a good idea to replace it due to age or no?

I would take the timing belt cover off to take a look at the actual condition of the belt- sometimes it is really hard to say, as rubber does wear down due to age, but the timing belt is extremely well protected as well presuming there are no oil leaks from behind the cam shaft seals or the crank seal

usually a visual check is pretty good as long as you haven't hit the mileage.

but personally, I would probably change it at 100K instead of the 150-160K recommendation if you're still on your original timing belt

and no....the 1mz timing belt is not exactly what I'd do "just for fun"...it's something that I do only when it has to be done...lol

Well I'm pushing 140k on the original timing belt, and its making noise. Time to change it. No, I haven't changed it before, but I know my way around a car kind of. haha.

I just don't have the 400 - 600$ to drop on it to change it.

It doesn't cost $400-$600 to change the timing belt on a Toyota. That's almost twice the dealership for a V6, and you gotta 4 cylinder...Local mechanics should do it for $100 average.
