Postby treefrog99 » Wed Mar 17, 2010 6:36 am

Hey all,

So I am cleaning my MAF today, doubt its ever been done and the car has 240,000km on it SOOOO it probably needs to be cleaned lol

So I took out the MAF, now whats my next step? How do I get at those little wires that actually need to be cleaned.. im assuming I need to take this apart some how? If you guys have any links or videos that would be great too!

THANKS!

No don't take it apart. It's very delicate, use an aerosol MAF sensor cleaner.
You can get it at pretty much any auto parts store.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

Ok well this is where I am confused.. watch this..

Go to about 2:03, see how he is cleaning the actual MAF sensor, the actual wires... how would I do that on mine? Or do I not need to do that?

See why I am confused? lol

Your confused because you want to do what you want. Get a MAF/Electronics parts cleaning spray. End of story. I did mine last night.

So I just spray it right in the big opening there, and thats it?

I have an Air Intake Cleaner (aerosol spray)... can I use that?

No, MAF or Electronic parts cleaner ONLY. It;s a sensitive piece. Spray it onto the wires. Hold it upside down so the liquid comes out. Let it dry, then reinstall it.

x3 or x4...whatever it is, don't take it apart, use ONLY a MAF/Electronics cleaner. You can get MAF cleaner @ Autozone/Adv. Auto Parts/etc. Shoot it in there, let the liquid drain and dry and reinstall = done

The reason you only use MAF/electonics cleaner, is that carb or
intake cleaner may also contain lubricants. You only want the
solvent. Lubricants contaminate the hotwire, and is the exact
thing you are trying to remove.

In case you were wondering.

If you look down into your MAF, you should be able to see the same wires as in that you tube video. Therefor if you can make eye contact with it there is no reason the spray can't reach it.

So... Shoot the spray down into it man! The MAF cleaner is alcohol based so it will dry relatively quickly. Don't worry you won't mess anything up.

One last question in regards to this!!!

Would this be safe to use on my MAF?
Image

It IS for electrical components too, and is non-flamable and non-conductive... and it does not have an "oil" in it... THANKS

^^^ FYI the reason I bought this was because none of the local stores had an actual MAF cleaner.. Guys at NAPA didn't even know what I was talking about

I would think it would be ok since it says electronics cleaner.
That's what you ask for next time, electronics cleaner. I asked the same thing at advanced and he said, "You want electronics cleaner."

It might be okay but I'd say to be safe, just get a hold of actual MAF cleaner. Not worth taking chances when you can just spend a little more effort and another $7 getting actual MAF cleaner and avoiding any potential problems.
