12mpg... HELP!

12mpg... HELP!

Postby treefrog99 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 5:31 pm

Hey again everyone..

Well the title says it all. I am getting about 12-14mpg on the highway at best!!!!! Worse in town, of course.. probably around 10-11mpg in town.

I am driving a 1999 V6 Solara, Automatic.. car has 241,000Kms on it (yes, Kilometers*, I am in Canada)

When I bought the car, the EGR valve was gone, replaced that. Also, there was a few leaks in the exhaust were the piping connected, that was fixed. Also has a brand new air filter. And Iv run a fuel system cleaner through it a few times.. But other than that, its basically untouched.

HELP! What could be causing such terrible mileage?

Thanks a ton :)

new Plugs, wires, oil change, spray electronics cleaner on the MAF then let it dry, and fuel filter are the main ones I would start with

Cell lights? You referring to the "error lights" or whatever you want to call them that appear on my dash? if so, none are on...

Oil change every 5000km is done... but iv been thinking about new plugs and wires.

I was thinking the MAF could be dirty, where would I find electronics cleaner? What should I be looking for..

Could it be a dirty o2 sensor or a bad cat?

Electronics cleaner can be found at most auto parts stores. I bought mine at advanced autoparts. Not sure if canada has them.

Also, would this be a good option for spark plugs?

I didn't know OBX made spark plugs... or had NGK make some with the OBX label. :)

I dunno, I haven't heard of a single person putting them in. The car came with Denso plugs and most stick with them. Some others, including myself, use NGKs'. All I know is don't use Bosch for our cars.

id start out with the tune up
-Plugs
-Wires
-Air filter
-PCV Valve
-MAF cleaning

a bad 02 sensor could cause bad gas mileage but you should have a check engine light if it was bad

a clogged cat should trigger a check engine light also, and you would notice a bad smell like rotten eggs, it would also seem very sluggish when you accelerate
