Car dies after boosting

Car dies after boosting

Postby Omes01SLE » Wed Nov 11, 2009 10:19 am

Hi - looking for some advice as to where to start in diagnosing the problem.

Went to start the car (2001 SLE) and nothing, no juice at all. The car starts when I boost it, but the interior light is flashing on and off, and once I put it in gear, the car dies. Checked the battery and it's fine. Any advice before I have to pay to get it towed to the mechanic?
thx

boosting = supercharger install?

If so, its probably a vacuum leak.. check your vacuum lines and make sure there isn't a leak and that its all connected properly

I think you are referring to jump starting your car?
If this is the case, it sounds like maybe something is shorted out with the interior light circuit. I need more info to help you.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

No, as soon as I remove the booster cables and either try to put it in gear, or turn on the lights - it dies. I'm thinking it could be the alternator?

ya, typically if it stalls after removing the jumper cables, it's time for an alternator. it's also possible that your battery is SO dead that your alternator is working overtime trying to charge it, and so it's not providing enough juice to keep the engine running.

dunno what's available in ontario, but many parts stores down here will test alternators and batteries for free. i know autozone has a machine in the store where you can take the alternator off the car (about a 15 minute job) and they can test it in the store.

thx man, yeah it ended up just being a dead battery. The first shop I took it into for testing must have done it wrong... back on the road now! thx.
