Strange Power Issue for you mechanics

Strange Power Issue for you mechanics

Postby kenny4454 » Wed Nov 11, 2009 4:13 pm

I own a 2000 Toyota Solara 5spd with a 2.2L. The car has 78k miles on it and I picked it up with around 28k. Ever since I owned the car there has been a strange electrical/power issue. When driving all the power within the car goes in and out very quickly and lasts about 10 seconds. During this time I hear a clicking sound. Since I am moving and the car is a stick and the the power goes in and out so fast the car never actually stalls, but it does turn on and off during this time. I have not been able to have the problem diagnosed because it happens so infrequently probably once every 3 to 6 months.

The alternator went in the car around 54k or so and I replaced it. It wasn't until last week where the power issue really started to become a problem. I was driving the car and all the power shut off completley ( it did not go in and out like before). I was unable to turn on my headlights or my flashers. When I turned the key only a few lights came on in the dash, but they were very dim. The car stayed this way for about 10 min. Then when I tried it again it was fine without showing any signs of power failure. The car didnt act up for a week until tonight. I got in the car turned the key and only a few lights came on it the dash, again very dim. I waited a dew min and the lights in the dash were brighter and the clock light turned on. The car still was unable to turn on the headlights/ or start. After about 5 min the car started and I was able to turn it on and off again without any issues. Please let me know if you have any idea what this could be. I would like to take care of it, so I dont get stranded at night and not be able to turn on my flashers. Thank you

Do you think the corrosion could be causing all of these symptoms?

It;s a good chance thats the issue. You can get new replacement terminals at the dealer for around $15 each I think. the (-) and (+) terminals are different sizes FYI.

There is a lot of white corrosion. I am going to clean up the terminal tomorrow and make sure there is a tight connection. I really appreciate the help, saves me a trip from taking it to my mechanic. Thanks a lot!!
