What are some of the most common causes of oil consumption in an engine with about 170,000 mile car?? Please leave any comments or ideas.

no puddles, no visible leaks, however, bad valve cover gaskets. its just wierd because i feel like the engine runs really hot kuz wen i get out the car the engine is very hot, to where you ca see the heat vapors.

yea but you have a gauge that tells you the temp in your dash. make sure you have antifreeze/water in the radiator though. then i would say if its not just leaking oil i would check or replace the pcv valve and then do a compression check. thats two things you can do without spending any $$$$

same here... if you have a V6 it gets hot... especially if u use A/C... oil consumption isn ot a big deal unless its very noticeble

i agree, i have a friend with an old jeep that he says is using a quart of oil every 100 miles! now that is a problem. though i will also say my v6 has 114k miles and i do not use any oil at all.

i got around 100k on mine and my valve guide seals leak slightly. Just a blue puff when i start it up. After 3k i dont even notice any drop in the oil level.

okay, to further my question a bit more, what are the symptoms of a bad pcv valve?? mines had what looks like oil around the outside of it. is this a sign??

that temp gauge is no where near accurate

Symptoms can be poor idle, oil in the intake parts which could cause some oil burn, excessive pressure in the crankcase (if stuck closed) or low pressure (if stuck open). One quick check of it is to take it out and shake it. If it rattles it should be functional.

If you dnt mind me asking, can you specify what you mean by poor idle?? when i start the car every morning, itll turn on and idle at about 1500 rpm for a while, then it drops down to a little over 1000. During my drive, it idles at about 1000 too. I just wanna be sure whats wrong with my car kuz i cnt really afford to have a pro look at it. Im gonna do that check as soon as i get a chance. thx for all this info. you people are amazing.

Thats normal when you start your car and its cold it will idle up so the engine can reach operating temperature as quick as possible, because it is deigned to run the most efficient at that temperature. The 1,000 rpm idle seems a little high but i wont worry about that too much.

Poor idle is pretty much a general term. It could be a high idle, low idle, erratic idle, looping idle... etc

The PCV valve is a very good place to start your trouble shooting, plus they are fairly cheap I think i got mine for less than 10 bucks at my local parts dealer.

I concur with solara90, pretty much dead on.

I have a 99 V6 and I use about a quart in 6000 miles. I have 116000 miles on it. The valve covers are the most likely for my loss. The exhaust doesn't smoke, and the engine is dirty around the valve covers. The PCV valve is very easy and cheap to replace, so you may as well replace it if you are in doubt. If the exhaust smokes, the engine is burning oil internally, probably from the rings or valve seals like Frank said.

You can do a compression test to determine if the rings are bad. If they are not, then you should suspect your valve seals.

If it is dirty around your PCV valve that does not necessarily mean a bad valve. But as I said, when in doubt replace it.

There is a lot of knowledge on this site if you know what questions to ask, good luck with your ride and welcome to SG.
Trust me, I'm a technician.
