What does the stock alarm do?
Only unlock the doors and a panic button?

If you say so.
My dad's 98 Camry OEM alarm does fine, IMO.
I want his siren though, cause it's loud a hell.

Do you have an SE or SLE???

The SE is pretty much keyless entry w/panic button
The SLE I think came with shock sensors and a transponder key. I could be wrong. :-?

If you have a stock alarm at all....it pretty much monitors only your doors, trunk, and hood. There is no shock sensor, and it has nothing to do with the transponder keys.

It's not horrible for stock, but it wasn't good enough for me.

I had a 99 SLE and for a stock alarm it was pretty good, key points were that:

if the windows were down and doors locked if you tried to open it from the inside it would sound the alarm

When the locksmith tried to open the door from the outside (with his jam & long pole) the doors would automatically lock & sound the alarm.

As for your gps getting stolen...was it in plain sight? All hooked up? If so even with an alarm & 5 seconds anyone can bash in your window and remove those items, sell on CL or to friends for 50-200$ depending...quick cash with or without an alarm...

It's not that the OEM alarm sucks.
You should take anythin' that's valueable out of your car everytime you get out, IMO.

Whatever alarm you buy will not protect you from a smash-n-grab. Please don't tell me you left a GPS attached to your dash and walked away happily putting your faith in an alarm, a driver's side glass that can be shattered easily and people with morals.

^^ I agree with that. No matter what type of alarm you have, if you give them the opportunity to smash your window and grab the GPS off your windshield in under 5 seconds, then you kinda deserve it.

If you have the Toyota "VIP" alarm system then there is a glass breakage sensor that comes with it. Still not the best, but it's more than what most other manufacturers come with.

If you're after a good aftermarket sytem, Im a big fan of the new Viper stuff....specifically the 5901, and 5902.

my gps was on the passenger seat because it kept on falling off the window.
but who ever stole it got lucky, i would have pistol whipped his ass.
i guess its kids going around the neighborhood looking in people cars
because my neighbor on the other block got his gps stollen to.

but even when I armed the alarm an open the door from the inside it doesnt go off.

^^ Do you wait 40 seconds after you lock it before you open the door? It takes the stock alarm that long to actually arm.

If it doesn't go off after that, then you don't have a stock alarm. Keep in mind that you have to have both doors, the hood, and trunk fully closed.
