Key Trouble

Key Trouble

Postby anttarz » Sat Sep 19, 2009 4:11 pm

My key just stopped working on my 99 Solara. It's an immobilizer key. I tried making a copy at the dealership months ago before having any issues. However, they were unable to program the new key using the onboard computer w/ the techs laptop. I have a few electrical issues.

Can the key be program without using the onboard computer?

You dont even use a computer to program the immobilizer

computer/scan tool... same crap. you do need at bare minimum a toyota handheld scanner, or their new laptop scanners. there's no way to program an immobilizer key without some sort of interface like that. that's actually by design so that a thief can't just hop in with a fresh cut key that hasn't been programmed and simply drive away.

if you know of an easier/better way, i'm all ears (and so is txbumblebee, i'm sure!)

sorry to say but the solara's from 99-01, don't have chip's in the key thats why the failed in trying to program it, when their is nothing to program, when the alarm goes off either by opening a door or breaking a window, the alarm will go off and will not start no matter what happens until the alarm is turned off, i went to the dealer and they said it has a chip i know it doesnt because i made a key at walmart for 2bucks and work with out a problem, so the only immobilizer is the alarm box its self, also if the alarm box is bad it will not start the car either, the way to find out if your car has a chip is by the car it self, it usely shows and indicater on the dash board flash a key symbol which it doesnt, i dont know about the gen1.5

ok before this blows up... some do and some don't.

in the camry line, mostly only the LE and XLE models have immobilizer chips in the keys. in the solaras, it's pretty much only the SLEs, though some SE V6 also have the immob. chips.

the easiest way to tell is to try and start your car with a PLAIN METAL key. one without a big plastic/rubber head on it. if it starts (make sure there are no other keys which might have a chip in them anywhere near your ignition) then you do not have an immobilizer system.

another way to tell - look at the master key - it will be the one with the big BLACK (not gray) plastic/rubber head. now look at the metal part of the key right where it goes into the plastic part. you will see a small dot about 1/16" around engraved into the key if you have a chip in the key. if there's no dot, then there's probably no chip either.

the dot thing is not 100% reliable as they didn't start doing that till the early 2000's or so, but it IS possible to have an immobilizer equipped 99 solara.

so get your panties out of their wad, take a chill pill, whatever... all solaras are not created equal.

going by your name, that's probably the reason you don't have a chip. most of the 4cyl models don't have them.

2. REGISTRATION OF ADDITIONAL MASTER KEY
There are 2 ways for registration of additional master key, one is depressing brake pedal and acceleration
pedal and the other is using TOYOTA hand−held tester.
HINT:
It is possible to register up to 7 master key codes including the already registered key code.
When any operation time described below is over, registration mode completes.
When the next procedure is performed while the timer is working, the timer completes counting time,
then next timer starts.
Depressing brake pedal and acceleration pedal

This works as I have done it on my ride :D

1. Insert already registered master key in the key cylinder
2. Depress and release the acceleration pedal 5 times ( DO WITHIN 15 SECONDS)
3. Depress and release the brake pedal 6 times,
and remove the master key. (DO WITHIN 20 SECONDS)

DO STEPS 4-6 WITHIN 10 SECONDS!!
4. Insert key to be registered in key cylinder.
5. Depress and release the acceleration pedal 1 time (security indicator blinks)
6. After 60 seconds additional master key is registered. (security indicator off)

the registration mode completes when pulling out the key within 10 seconds and the brake pedal is depressed or after indicator is off 10 seconds pass

^^^ i think he's right.

Those keys are available on e-bay for less than 10$. They come blank with a chip inside, you go to the key shop, get it trimed to match your old key. Then, using your old key do the above steps (or what ever the e-bay instruction tells you).

my 99 v6 has a chip... i only have one key with the chip... i hope i dont loose it :P i should be getting the ebay one just in case

I got my second key from an ebay vendor with instructions for about $12 shipped. Programmed fine then took it to Home Depot and they had a scannalyzer and told me they dont do chipped keys incase they screw up the cut. Took mine to the Toy dealer and they cut it for free.

Hi,

sorry for resurrecting the old thread.
Those steps worked for me once in past a year ago and for some time I had 2 ignition keys (both Master) working fine. My other key was a cheap $15 ebay key with blank transponder. I was able to program it successfully using brake and gas pedals.
However then I removed battery off car for a long time while I was troubleshooting electrical issues under hood and eventually replaced the front wiring harness (not for engine)... since that time only my original key works and there is no way to register other keys which drives me crazy ...

tried registering again my ebay key (same as before) many times with no luck. I assumed the transponder went out in it somehow.

Today even purchased a brand new key from dealer (cut from digital copy in their system by VIN, not a copy cut from my old worn out key) at $54+tax and still no luck :(

not sure what I'm doing wrong ... now wondering if maybe my brake pedal binds a little sometimes and computer cannot count the proper number of depressions? gas pedal is not a problem I'm sure.

one question as I want to make sure I do this procedure right.
After you press gas pedal 5 times and then brake pedal 6 times and you remove the original Master key, all is needed is to simply insert new blank key and press gas pedal once and that's it, right?
I follow the timing and tried doing it very fast and slowly numerous times with no difference.

Problem is that I do NOT get a confirmation blink from ECU after I depress (& release) the gas pedal once on a new key... the Security keeps blinking every second no matter how long I wait and the new key never gets registered.
