Check Engine.

Check Engine.

Postby ChrissyD123 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:43 pm

So I know that if the check engine light MAY turn on doesn't always mean to ACTUALLY check it. Thats water under the bridge for me. ...

BUT NOW... It JUST went on today. (ironically I thought to myself yesterday "I can feel my check engine light come on VERY soon") and indeed it did.

My 99' has 112k and is almost due for an oil change (which is probably irrelevant to the situation)

Anyone know what it might be? I know its something.
And recently I've noticed she is becoming a somewhat rough gear shifter. and ESPECIALLY when I let off the gas all the way. It makes a kind of JOLT. Not terrible, but not normal at the same time.

Also whenever I've been driving for a while, once I accelerate it makes this obnoxious rattling sound coming from the two front tires. (But I'm not 100% sure the tires are what's causing it) THAT started after I installed my subs. And again, I'm not sure if THAT is the leading cause to the rattling sound. But I do know it started happening right after I installed them. I drove maybe 3-4 times before that started. And everything is out of reach with the engine bay.

OH wow. I forgot where I was before this..
Oh ya. Bottom line and point being, WTF could that rattle be?!?!
And could it be relevant to the Check engine light?
Better yet, could ANY of all the above be relevant?
:-?

If anyone could give me some opinions and suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

its kinda hard to say, get the code read and we could help you out better, and more than likely the rattle has nothing to do with a check engine.

Where is the code? I would think it would be located somewhere on the car.

I dont know where you got the idea of not having to check every check engine light you get...but thats wrong. They come on for a reason, to alert you of an abnormal issue.

and, to read the code, take the car to autozone and have them read your check engine light code and then report back here with the code(s).

I think Chrissy has her "Check Engine" light confused with her "Maint" light.
Check engine is warning you of a problem.
Maint light is to remind you that its time for an oil change.

At least I hope that is the only bit of confusion.

No... as far as I'm concerned it says check engine (which means malfunction indicator)

there is a separate light for oil. the low oil pressure sh!t. But that's probably irrelevant too. [/url]

Yeah just take it to auto zone they do a free scan tool check and they should be able to pull out the code, make sure you write the code down and come on here and let us know what it is. I know there is thread here with all of the codes.

ok as for the "rattling", is it rattling or more like a vibration? and when does it do it, when your coming to a stop? at certain speed? all the time?

I do on my Yaris and I did on my Tercel. Not my Solara, but I think some Solaras have them.

i think only around 02 or so is when they added the oil change (maint) light.

and there are no lights on the dash that are irrelevant - they all serve a purpose. if you have low oil pressure (red oil can light) and you continue to run the engine, you WILL destroy the engine. the red battery icon means there's some electrical issue - likely a failed alternator. the red BRAKE or (!) lights mean either the parking brake is engaged or your brake fluid is low, which means you might not be able to stop! ...and so on.

if it was irrelevant, toyota wouldn't have spent money putting it there.

Hey Chrissy, just go to AutoZone like the others said and then let us know the code.
Might be an easy fix, might be your eBay intake.
Mine took a while to turn the light on, and had some rough running issues.
Maybe that's what you're referring to?

The Gen 1.5s have the maint. light but the 1s do not.
A lot changed in 2002.
Trust me, I'm a technician.
