What is this? UPDATE, car seems to shutter and shake...

Postby Jakecallun20 » Thu Aug 27, 2009 11:46 pm

Alright, Heres the deal....My car seems to shutter and shake at random intervals, I THINK it only does it when the motor is luke warm. It does other wierd stuff when its warmed up. At first I only noticed this shaking when I was running the A/C. So I assumed the bearings in the pulley for the A/C comp were bad, but now its doing it regardless of the A/C. Its been happening for about a month now and now its happening almost every time I drive. I'm starting to worry about this car, along with very hard shifts sometimes/car bucking me into steering wheel with downshifts and what not. Is my car on its way out? It has 167,056 miles. 1999 V6 SLE auto.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could be your transmission, that's my guess. You still on the original tranny?

i read this post earlier and thought to say tranny, but remembered that you had done a tranny drain/refill with amsoil.

hopefully it's not the tranny, but to me, it sounds like it is the tranny.

does it feel/sound like your tranny is hunting for gears sometimes (like it can't decide if it wants to upshift or not)? b/c if this is the case, then it's a tranny issue.

my recommendation would be to take it to a tranny shop to have them give you an estimate/diagnosis.

gotta love them free quotes

at least that way you'll know if it's the tranny or not.

btw, right before my tranny went out, it would hunt for gears, and also have some problems downshifting (not as drastic as me being thrown into the steering wheel though). i did a drain/refill myself, and changed the filter, but eventually ended up having the tranny replaced.

Yeah now that I think about it...sometimes it does sorta do that. Either that or that it has a delayed reaction. I just refilled the transmission with dexron 6 since dexron 3 couldn't be found, and I replaced the filter and cleaned the pan magnets...there were only a tiny tiny bit of shavings on each magnet and the valve body looked brand new. Worse comes to worse and my transmission goes....I'm ditching the car. 3000 dollars for a new transmission for a car with 170k miles that only blue books at 3500-4000......to me thats pointless.

Bluebook $3500-$4000 minus $3000 transmission.
If the trans goes out I am willing to give you the difference.
$500-$1000 with the crap transmission.
PM me if you're interested. :)
Trust me, I'm a technician.

Alright well...call me what you want but I just got back from Chicago...In the Solara, and it didn't like the trip because it blew my EGR valve and the EGR position sensor, came up with P0402 and P1411. Not sure what that means in response to my recent problems, but I'm sure the EGR was "failing" before and maybe that could be the/a cause of the shaking and shivering my car is doing. As far as the shifts and whatnot its gotten better and is kind of sporadic now. I am looking into getting a new car just because I don't want to get stranded on the side of the road, but now I may not need it as soon as I had once thought. Still deciding on what to look into and research about as far as a new car goes, any suggestions? I've been looking at Ford F-150 and the previous gen (2000-2006) Tundras for trucks, and I've been looking at some Subarus and Scions for cars.

you still gonna make it to the meet?

in all seriousness though, have you tried to clean out the EGR?

i'm sure this isn't just a coincidence....this may be cheaper to fix than a blown tranny (which btw, including labor, only cost me approx. $1300 w/ a salvage tranny)

let us know what happens

I hope the EGR is the root problem, as far as the meet goes.... Yeah I'll be there one way or another, HOPEFULLY in A solara.... The way I see it....if the tranny goes....so does the car, I'll wash my hands of it. I just couldn't justify spending that much on a car that isn't worth a lot to begin with...scratches, dents, destroyed driver leather seat, leaking sunroof and driver door, interior pieces falling off the car, major carpet stainage.....etc...this list could go on and on. :-?

transmission has nothing to do that your car idles bad and when you accel it shutters, its engine always have been, here's what it can be: bad gas, spark, fuel dilvery, map sensor would also cause this, does it happen when you are low in gas?, the hard shifts are the following: transmission seloinds, oil would mybe cause only if the transmission is shifting slow example; you driving and you accel, it would shift at 5700-6000 rpms then you will see the rpms drop slowy because the next gear is coming, this happens when you are low in oil or worn out clutch discs' in the transmission, your best bet would be you doing a transmission oil change with a new filter from toyota, i say toyota because the filters last 30,000 miles, the auto parts will sell you one that will last 5,000 miles it has happen to me.
