CV Joint Half Shaft Help

CV Joint Half Shaft Help

Postby ftw » Tue Sep 08, 2009 6:49 pm

I need to replace the left-side drive shaft. I have a 1999 SE V6. I'm having some problems finding the correct CV joint half shaft for the manual transmission in the auto parts stores. I went to Autozone, Advance Auto, Napa and Bennett Auto and they all have a drive shaft that bolts up on the inner CV joint. The shaft that is in there now slides in and has like a snap ring at the end to hold it in place. The dealerships have a price range of $350-$500 for one half shaft!!!

One guy at the parts store suggested I rebuild the CV joints but I never had shafts rebuilt before and I don't think I would like to.

Did anyone replace a half shaft recently or know what the correct part number is for an aftermarket shaft?

You got a refurbished shaft from the dealer? Which dealer was this...it would work out better for me to buy and ship from that dealer than spend $500 here.

I found these a while back when I thought I needed a new axle assembly. They aren't stock, but definitely cheap.

Just for my frame of reference, how does that one differ from the ones in my link aside from price?

Glad you got everything worked out!

just unbolt it from the hub, and use a crowbar to pry it out- nice and simple! after you've done it once, you can probably do it in in about 10 min

So its that simple??? :D

Ive delt with RWD so much, this will be my first FWD that ive done by myself. Im assuming this cant be anymore difficult, if not less, than installing a RWD axle. :-?

What about installing the new one?
Is it just as simple as snapping it in?

Ill also be replacing the hub, pressing in new wheel bearings, and new/used knuckle.

The company (EMPI) seems to be the same but I was skeptical since it had the wrong picture and they did not have any specifications on the axles. This store had all of the specs and the part number matched EMPI's online catalog. I actually ordered the part through his ebay store.

LEE337, just like Eye8pussies said installation is fairly easy. I also unbolted the strut so I could move the hub around and then the axle just pulls right out. You might need to have something under the inner joint because some gear oil did run out when the axle came out.
